Here is a post of someone made that really makes some sense:
Most of those questions really were answered. either directly or indirectly. The polar bear thing was explained that Dharma was taking different kind of animals to the island to test the effects on them . Remember in season 3, sawyer/Kate were in an animal cage for a number of episodes... And Sawyer found the way to get treats -in the shape of a fish- it was a large cage... fish shaped treats... ring a bell? Obviously at some point the bear escaped and roamed the island (it was actually on the other island, but everybody knows that polar bears are great swimmers) four toed foot was never explained, might have been an "error" of the builders,... as it was built about 2 thousand years ago. In a leaked script they state that the brother (Jacob/MIB) were born on 23 B.C. You can hear their mother and the mother/killer speaking either Latin or Greek. Everyone says Latin, but for some reason it sounds Greek to me. the other passengers that died on the crash were not on the church because it was not a flight 815 reunion... Jack's dad tell him very clearly, that they are there because everyone there were really important at the most important time of their lives. That in time explains why Penny and Juliette were there even though they had not been on the plane. Penny had been important to Desmond, which in time was important to everyone else there. And Juliette was important to everyone, but most of all to Sawyer. Michael wasn't at the church because he was condemned to roam the island as a whisper (he said it himself a few episodes ago) Walt was not really important to this particular group of people and Ben was not ready to move on or was afraid of what would be awaiting for him on the other side (HUGE GUILT)
see? not all questions are LOST forever... just pay attention to what the characters say.
Even though they didn't answer all the fans questions they DID tell us exactly what the ALT was. Jack's father tells Jack "Why am I here? , Why are you here?" then he goes on to explain that they are in a place where all the people that meant something to each other in life get together before they "move on". Jack's dad then says that some of them died before him, and some after him, but in the place where they were, now time did not mean the same thing as when they were alive. Meaning that EVERYBODY THERE had eventually died, either ON the island (Jack, Charlie, Boone, Sayid, Sun, Jin, etc) or OFF the island (Lapidus, Kate, Sawyer, Claire, Miles). None of them have any idea of this until they are ready to "let go", since time is perceived in a different way in that place. It is evident that "letting go" is the ultimate realization of where they are and acceptance of "the moving on" You can see this in Jin and Sun, leaving the hospital and telling sawyer that they don't need the police protection, they are not afraid anymore because they KNOW, and know where they are, and that they can't be hurt anymore.
I heard people asking WHY had they been chosen and put on the plane. I guess it was not clear enough that they WERE NOT on the plane because they were chosen as candidates; but that they were chosen as candidates BECAUSE they were on the plane.
See, Jacob could move in and out of the island at will. If the island can move through time, it's fair to conclude that Jacob also could move through time. And so he moved through time and visited "the candidates" as a way of protecting them and making sure that no matter what choices they made they would end up in the right place at the right time ("Oceanic flight 815 September 2004) think of him as a sort of Doctor Who, for lack of a better comparison.
Actually I just realized that if you look closely in the flashback, when Jacobs visits the candidates' pasts he touches them. but it's not a regular touch... but seems like the touch symbolizes a protection or something. Like he's in a way protecting them and guiding them, suggesting the paths to chose.
Exhilarating how even though they didn’t answer some of the most burning questions of the series (the numbers, who drops the food, why the island can move through time, why it heals, etc) they ultimately don't matter... because we end up knowing (or not knowing) as much as the Lost characters did. They were never given these answers as well... AND they had to live/suffer though every one of them. So think of them like the "glowing briefcase" in Pulp fiction... ultimately it does not matter what the answers are, we only want to know because curiosity is human nature.
