I saw it a second time today, this time in 3D.
It played just as good the second time around. The 3D conversion was pretty darn good... you could tell they spent more time and money on it. However, that being said, it still wasn't mandatory. It really doesn't make much difference what way you see it to be honest.
With my emotions reigned in this time, I was able to hone in on a couple of nitpicks... VERY MINOR nitpicks though...
-Slattern is awesome, and his resilience and size definitely sell him as a Category 5, but I just wish we got to see him do a bit more at the end other than keep "dying" and coming back.
-Raiju- I loved this creature's design, but he's in the final battle so little that you barely get a good look at him before he's split in half with a sword. I would have much rather he had the more promintent role that Scunner had in the final battle.
-Why exactly did the Aussie pilots get out of their Jaeger and start shooting Leatherback? I know they said they can either get in the escape pods or "do something totally stupid." But why did they opt for the "totally stupid" route?
-Why did Crymson Typhoon need three pilots? They say something about a "three [something] technique" and in the making of book, GDT says that the two in the cockpit are the main pilots and the other guy is in charge of weapons. But like... why? I guess I still don't really get it.
That's honestly about it. I didn't have a problem with the characters at all. Like most del Toro characters, they ARE archetypes, but they are ones that work I think, just like the archetypes in something like Star Wars would work.
I've seen a lot of people complain about how they dispatch Otachi with the sword at the very end, but I F*CKING LOVED THAT. Its a staple of the genre... the Power Rangers, Ultraman, even MechaGodzilla... they wait till the end to bust out the main weapon. This was an obvious nod to that, I thought and it was awesome.
Anyway... I still loved this thing and maintain that its the best the genre has had to offer since the Gamera trilogy and it sits right up there with those films, IMO.
