DEFINITELY felt more like a G.I. Joe movie compared to the first one. It's not perfect, but I really enjoyed it. At least Cobra Commander was recognizable this time!

I'm not sure how people keep saying Retaliation felt more like a Joe movie. The only thing more Joe about was Cobra Commander's helmet. None of the Joes had a good character moments in the movie and the Rock's "I don't want to be a leader" arc starts and finished within five minutes. Bruce Willis seemed like he'd rather be doing something else entirely (maybe they weren't giving him 1 million a day, ZING!). Zartan seemed to be the villain of the film over Cobra Commander. And Jonathan Pryce does not make for an imposing villain. Outrageous and silly, yes. Imposing no.

Also the big weapon-macguffin had absolutely no impact at all. Oh yeah, sure they destroyed England, but how does that affect (effect?) the joes? The first movie actually showed that the nano weapons were a huge threat early on and kept on that fact throughout the movie. In Retaliation, you didn’t know what the hell Cobra was up to until they destroyed London. I’m sure they were trying to be mysterious but it just came out confusing and dumb.

And as neat as the ninja stuff was, it felt like if it was removed the only difference would have been the running time.

It felt more like a Joe movie to me because it was a bunch of Joe guys fighting Cobra guys. Not a bunch of hyper scifi iron man suit wearing international special ops people fighting Cobra guys.

I dunno. This felt closer to what I imagined a G.I. Joe film would be based on my memories of the show. Rise of Cobra felt too much like somebody making a movie about G.I. Joe without really having experienced the classic characters and world.

The reason it felt more like a Joe movie is because of Cobra Commander and the ninja battle. The battle at the mountain was a nice homage to the silent issue of the original series while CC actually felt threatening. It is just that everything else sucked. Who the hell puts the self destruct button for their big weapon in the same freaking controller to launch them? Plus, the plan relied on the other countries destroying their own missiles. What if the N Korean dude decided to not take out his own missiles? Dumbest plan ever!!

The other thing is that it did not have mecha suits in it. The only thing sci-fi the movie really had was when Firefly used that bike that turned into missiles.
