Granted that I've not seen a lot of this year's movies, but so far this is the best of them, outshining the rest by a long shot. Nice to see a science fiction movie with some degree of intelligence again, or at least a movie that won't insult your intelligence. Also nice to see how it literally shut up the mouthy teenaged twits in the audience as well, this movie grabs your attention and doesn't let go. (saw it at a huge shopping complex in Irvine that's a bratty teen magnet)

I like the clever little references to the original series (the Primate Center's caretaker's name being Dodge Landon, for instance), an ape named Maurice (after Maurice Evans), other dialogue ("It's a Madhouse!" and the classic "stinking paws" line)....nothing too glaringly obvious, though....amazing effects and camera work- soaring through trees, over and under the Golden Gate Bridge, and Andy Serkis doing brilliant work yet again. Interesting possible sequel set-up as well, the brief mentioning of a manned Mars mission, and a headline suggesting that the mission was "lost".

Takes away the bad memory of the Tim Burton movie, and shows that if you're going to remake or "reboot" (or whatever), it CAN be done right.

I loved it. :D

Dark Night of the Planet of the Apes
(they will specifically use the spelling NIGHT to show that they aren't implying Batman is in it, but will use the popularity of The Dark Knight to promote the movie...)

Just watched the first 2 films tonight.

Planet of the Apes- Just as great as I remembered. A true classic, and it was a mistake to ever remake it. There is so much iconic imagery, scenes, lines, etc. that its almost like remaking Star Wars. In addition to being a bad idea, it also led Tim Burton to make the worst movie of his career.

Beneath The Planet of the Apes- This was my first time seeing it. This was... weird. I'm not sure where the hell they got the idea to tell this story as an Apes sequel. The first thing I thought was "What happened to the budget?" as we are treated to some truly awful visual effects and really bad gorilla masks on most of the extras. Also, too much of these testicle faced bomb worshipers (an admittedly awesome idea) and not enough apes. It just dragged and had some really goofy and even confusing stuff in it. And Heston obviously didn't want to be there, which shows, since he's totally phoning it in. I honestly didn't really care for it that much. I LOVED the ending though.

I'm really looking forward to watching Escape and ESPECIALLY Conquest though.

I think it's not really a prequel but instead a reboot as well, BUT the genius of the film is that unless you want to get super, uber nerd and pick apart the timeline like some of you are...the average person could see this and still see it as a prequel to the original series.

I personally don't care how a person sees this film as long as they have seen this film :D . It's their choice, even if it's wrong :wink:

Just bringing up the discussion was all. Since somebody DID mention the the space craft that got lost POTA in this new movie. Was just asking if it was a possibility at all if this could be the UN ALTERED universe/timeline before Zira and Cornelius traveled back in time and changed how the apes evolved.

Basically like this(timeline):

ORIGINAL TIMELINE-
RISE(new movie) > POTA > BENEATH (TIMELINE NOW CHANGED since Zira and Cornelious travel back in time at the end of this movie before the world is destroyed)

NEW TIMELINE-
ESCAPE(the baby of Cornelius and Zira becomes Caesar) > Conquest > Battle

The timelines CAN WORK together if you look at it like this....
