But movies like Prometheus and Avatar had 3D that didn't just benefit cuz of CG. Both of those movies did a lot with depth of field and other stuff, stuff that was meticulously planned out by the director and cinematographer to fit the 3D format. That kind of planning is totally lost in post conversions, especially when the movie wasn't even conceived as a 3D film. And yes, even a lot of the CG-heavy shots were planned this way.
At least with movies like Alice In Wonderland and Piranha 3D, they were SHOT with 3D in mind even if they didn't film on 3D. But most of these post conversions DON'T EVEN do that at all. This movie being no different. They didn't even decide to do it in 3D until after filming was underway.
