Dr Who Japanese style!

Postby SparkieGojira » Fri Jan 20, 2006 7:57 am

In case anyone hasn't seen it here is the ultra cool cover art for the early 80's Japanese printing of the novelization of THE DALEKS! Love that ultra creepy take on the Daleks and that the TARDIS looks like a red london phone booth!

And here's SPEARHEAD FROM SPACE!

COLONY IN SPACE doesn't do as much for me.

Nor does DAY OF THE DALEKS... but I guess that is one of the terrorist and she has just shot and killed that Dalek. Impossible!

I got these off the ON TARGET! website but I now somewhere out there is
a lot of cool illustrations and what not from inside them as well. Anyone now where that website is?

I'll continue to look for them. They're bound to turn up somewhere.

I know that continuity is really open to interpretation in the WHOniverse, and generally I ignore anything that hasn't aired on television, just to keep things straight. Many of the novels are excellent, but I don't consider them canon any more than I would a STAR TREK novel. Most of the Big Finish stuff is great (due largely to having the real actors on hand), but there is so much out there that it would be impossible to track it all down, much less have time to listen to it all.

I have also seen all of the new TV series thus far and know that you don't really need any bridge between McGann and Eccleston to follow it. It's just that I enjoyed McGann so much in the otherwise shaky Fox movie, and there is part of me that has always been bothered by that gap in the Doctor's history. The trailers for these BBC7 broadcasts specifically refer to the Time War between the Time Lords and the Daleks, the destruction of Gallifrey, the 9th Doctor (including his northern accent and attire) and even Rose, as well as the events in the FOX movie. They've been officially given the nod by current Series Producer Russell Davies. They also apparently ignore all of the 8th Doctor stuff from the novels and any previous audio dramas. They are being marketed quite specifically as the official, true events which took place in between McGann's first story and Eccleston's, so I figure I'll treat them as such and check 'em out.

Haven't had a chance to listen to SHADA yet. That story is a bit of a quandry for me. On the one hand, it was an official story for the TV series. On the other hand, it was never finished in its original form and never aired. I've never been quite sure how to fit it in to my own personal view of DR. WHO continuity. Having a later Doctor come back and do the same story (on audio, no less) only makes it more complicated.

Yep, actually it's full of fun performances! Jobel and Tessmacher are great darkly comic characters as well. And though it may be sacraligious I think Terry Malloy's Davros in this one is every bit as good as Micheal Wisher in GENESIS.

BTW... I was flipping past Animal Planet yesterday morning and came across a clip of the 5th Doctor riding up in a horse drawn wagon to a wooden gate. He climbs out of the wagon and walks through the gate.... and then the horse follows him; the wagon destroying the gate. I'm sure I remember seeing the same blooper ages and ages ago on that Dick Clark hosted Blooper show, but I can't for the life of me remember what 5th Doctor story it came from! Maybe The Visitation?

Peter Davison played Tristan Farnon on All Creatures Great and Small before getting the role as the Doctor. If you're interested, your local PBS station[s] are likely running the series on Sundays [on the East coast the 2 stations I can pick up air the series at 7pm - but you'll want to check your local listings for the exact time].

Oh yes I knew Peter Davidson as Tristan Farnon well before he even became the 5th Doctor! Watching ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL, MONTY PYTHON, DR WHO, CONNECTIONS, THE DAY THE UNIVERSE CHANGED and so on really solidfied my reputation as "That PBS watching dweeb" at school!

Sadly ALL CREATURES isn't on either of two PBS stations I get in Seattle. I understand there was various mini series and specials made as late as 1993 taking the story into the 1950's. Never got to see those. :(

BTW, I just remembered the blooper clip was from THE AWAKENING. In that episodes a modern town's midevil recreation festival runs amock, leading me to think it was a historical set episode.

Ahh I see - I've never seen The Awakening so I thought the clip might've been from ACGAS

Nope...not unless Tristan decided to wear a celery stick on his lapel! :)

Heh for some reason I just remembered a caption contest DWM did circa 1984 or so of a frame of Davison as Triston with his hand up a cow's bum (a regular occurance in the show as I recall!). The winning caption was really off beat and wierd and I sure wish I could remember it!

Sparkie, did you forget Pyramids of Mars? That one's got Hammer horror written all over it.
And I've still yet to see Talons of Weng Chiang...
