It was a satisfactory sequel... it started kinda slow but really grew on me during the second half. This one has more fantasy, but I still prefer the first one by a fairly large margin.

This one had a WAY weaker villain, whose motivation was nothing more than "he's the bad guy"- I mean, they never say WHY he wants to "restore the universe to black" or whatever. And I HATED what they did with Selvig, reducing him to being pretty much a one note comic relief. Those are really the only beefs I had. The action scenes are leagues better than the first one, so I guess it all evens out.

I was extremely entertained by this film, and imho it stands right up there with the first Thor film as one of my favorite Marvel films. I'll agree with Mouth that Malekith isn't as impressive as Loki for a bad guy. But his motivation is pretty straightforward and understandable. He pretty much goes directly at his objective without much trickery, so he does seem less interesting as a bad guy. But he never came across as being a non-threat. He was a leader and used what resources he had very effectively. And I don't consider Selvig to be a one note comic relief, he did help out greatly at the end. But I do wonder what he was doing wandering around loose without S.H.I.E.L.D. supervision after The Avengers. But it was overall a good story.

The action sequences were great, the final battle between Thor and Malekith was suitably epic, this was a great film from start to finish.

And speaking of the finish, there are two easter eggs at the end, one before and one after the credits.

And anything else I could say would be major spoilers.

As I said in the other thread:

This movie was pretty good. It is no where near as good as the first one, as it feels like a sequel, but it is by far the best Marvel sequel since X-Men 2. It puts to shame the god awful Iron Man sequels and shows that sometimes Marvel can do a follow up right. Unfortunately, the movie does sacrifice character development for countless action, which is cool, but the movie needed to be at least 20 minutes longer so there could actually be some breathing room in between the action. Loki is by far the star of the movie as every scene with him is nothing short of brilliant. He is pretty much The Dark Knight's version of the Joker in this movie. I did like the Cybermen... I mean Dark Elves a lot better than the Frost Giants. Lastly, there are scenes during the credits and after, so make sure you stay throughout the entire thing to get both scenes. One leads into Guardians of the Galaxy while the other is pretty much the end of Thor 2. Overall, I give this movie a 7 or 8/10, haven't decided yet. Need a few days to think about it.

ANOTHER THING. What was up with the beginning where they are telling Thor he should marry Sif, then they just forget about all that? I even remember them mentioning a love triangle and an arranged marriage in one of the initial plot summaries for this... a lot of stuff had to have been cut out, a la Incredible Hulk. Cuz there were also some things going on with reshoots and Joss Whedon being brought in to help iron things out in editing.

Eh, this is okay. I think I had about as much fun as I did with the first film.

Glad I wasn't the only one who noticed the Sif romance thing being dropped.

Also, Malekith sucks as a villain. I mean, there wasn't much to him in the comics honestly, but this is...blech. The aether is dumb, but his regular macguffin was used in the last film. The aether is weird and ambiguous in purpose and...I dunno. I just dunno.

I think the Thor films are nearly even for me. I liked the fights a bit more this time, I liked the score a bit better, but the story felt sort of...meh compared to the first. The motivations just weren't there.

Nobody is praising it:
-Not as good as the first one.
-Okay, but had some MAJOR problems.
-Weak villain, convoluted plot.
-Structural/pacing issues.

The best review I've seen for the movie so far basically comes down to "It's kinda fun, in a really stupid way." Yeah, I'll save my theater money. And Iron Man 3 is solid. I wish I could stick up for it more, but truth be told, NONE of the Avengers Cinematic Universe stuff is worth defending very much; the closest thing to a special film in the bunch is The Avengers and it's only special because of the number of characters and not being a complete and utter mess of a film despite the number of characters.

And I'm not a huge fan of the first Thor (best of the Marvel movies thus far? If that's true it just goes to show the overall "meh" quality of these movies thus far...simple, safe, straightforward stuff that's not worth a full-price ticket).

Everything I've heard from this makes it sound about as good as Captain America (I'll grant I haven't seen the film, but the villain's agenda sounds about as incoherent as Red Skull's and the McGuffin of this story sounds about as well-defined as the blue glowing cube of doom), and I can safely say I was happy not to have spent my money going to see that particular film.

I never felt Red Skull's agenda was all that incoherent, but Malekith's makes much less sense.
Just to warn you.

The more I think about it the more I feel they just said "MALEKITH IS THE VILLAIN, AND NOW HE LOOKS COOL. THE END."
