Saw this today and loved it.

It's not perfect, but it's a helluva ride and it's one of the only movies since the 80s where the children are actual people AND enjoyable ones at that.

That said, there are some faults (obligatory spoiler warning):

my only BIG complaint is:
the alien isn't handled really well...i mean, i get that there were a couple of lines saying that it was just scared and we turned it against us, but i never FELT that...show, don't just tell...i felt like i was being TOLD that the alien is not that bad but there was only ONE moment where I was ever shown anything like that (when he grabs joe) and it just wasn't enough.

i also didn't care for the overly schmaltzy ending wherein the crucial last pice of the craft just so happens to be his mom's locket...honestly, that to me felt like something Spielberg tacked on at the end there

which leads me to my final complaint (and a nitpicky one at that) i occasionally felt like the structure was a bit off...every now and then i would find myself saying "wait...what happened to [this character]?" or "why haven't we seen [that character] in a while?" or "what about [this plot point]? why hasn't it come up in a while?"
i think the entire necklace thing could have been left out of the movie all together and would have made for a bit of a cleaner finish with less forced sappiness and unnecessary catharsis...

like i said, LOVED the film, and could go on ALL DAY about the things i loved, but those couple of things stuck out to me as less-than-stellar aspects

oh and, while the alien does evoke Cloverfield slightly, i found myself laughing at the people who thought that the similarity meant that Cloverfield was somehow a sequel to this...

6:13 – On Super 8 and similarities to Cloverfield
[quote] “We (J.J. Abrams and Reeves) met in an 8mm film festival when we were thirteen years old and the movie the way it affects me most profoundly is not – I know people when Super 8 was first announced [thought] is this the Cloverfield sequel? – but really I know it’s about his (Abrams) childhood and I shared so much of that time with him. When I saw that movie, in addition to loving the movie, when it got to the end titles and it had that film the kids had made [it was] just so evocative of the films J.J. and I made when we were kids that it blew me away.â€

Yeah, I enjoyed Super 8 less for the alien/monster part of it, and more for just seeing those kids react to all of it.
