Just got back from the 10pm showing of THE WOLVERINE. Now I'm not going to pretend that I went to see this film because I'm an X-Men fan because I'm not. I had to practically be dragged to see the last film, First Class, by friends and that was after it had been out for a month. I went to see this movie because I'm a fan of Japanese films and that extends to films set in Japan with a mostly Japanese cast like this one.* So while Huge Jackman did a great job (as always) playing Wolverine here's how everyone else did.
First off at 52-years-old Hiroyuki Sanada (Message From Space, Legend of the Eight Samurai, The Ring, Onmyoji, The Last Samurai, Twilight Samurai, Sunshine, Lost, Speed Racer) looks amazing! As always he gives a great performance here as Shingen the covetous son of Ichirō Yashida played by Haruhiko "Hal" Yamanouchi a Japanese actor who has mostly performed in Italian films up to now but who gives a solid performance here.
Playing the role of Wolverine's "bodyguard" is Japanese model turned actress Rila Fukushima who is possibly one of the most striking Japanese women I've ever laid eyes upon. Though I do have to say that Fukushima's character of Yukio is one of the most blatant attempts I've ever seen to take a Japanese actress and turn her into a live-action anime girl. She's got bright red hair, wears stripped knee-high stockings, black combat boots, a leather skirt, uses a katana, she's basically an otaku fantasy come to life. It also helps that she has some of the biggest eyes I've ever seen on a Japanese actress.
Also making her film debut is the lovely Tao Okamoto as Mariko the damsel in distress Wolverine must rescue. Early on its stated that she's proficient at knife throwing and karate but despite that she still gets kidnapped more easily and more often then Princess Peach. Rounding out the cast is Japanese actor Brian Tee best known for his role is Fast & Furious Tokyo Drift and veteran Korean actor Will Yun Lee as ninja clan leader Harada; both of whom do a great job with their roles and seeing Jackman punch Tee in the face proves especially funny.
Unlike the previous X-Men movies the plot here isn't focused on superheroics and mutant politics but rather on corrupt families, corporate espionage and assassination with the added fact that three of the main characters happen to have superpowers and one has an Iron Man-style suit of samurai armor. This decision to treat the superheroes as not a big deal, just a part of this world, gives the story a refreshing edge. But make no mistake their is plenty of high-flying martial arts action to be seen as well; a highlight of which is Wolverine's duel with a pair of yazuka thugs atop a bullet train going 300 mph!
Overall: Recommended.
*And this Christmas' 47 RONIN for which the trailer was on the front of THE WOLVERINE. That's smart advertising by Universal. After the trailer the crowd seemed pretty excited about the movie and I heard a lot of people saying "I'll see that!" Also good is that if anyone in the audience didn't know what the word "Ronin" meant it's defined twice in THE WOLVERINE. Also smart.
