I had to look up Stephen Sommers info on IMDB, I was surprised to find that I'd seen 5 of the movies Sommers has written/directed. Sommers' name doesn't inspire confidence that this Tarzan movie will be the faithful adaptation ERB fans have been waiting for. However, in all honesty the prospect of Sommers' being attached to the movie doesn't have me as concerned as seeing that Seth Rogen will be playing The Green Hornet in Sony's upcoming GH movie.

Warner Brothers has already failed once with Greystoke, and considering the direction the current heads at WB want to take future comic book films I'm not going to hold out any hope for this latest Tarzan project. That goes double when phrases like "new take" are used...

I wish the books weren't so hard to find. I've got copies of the first two but haven't found any of the later volumes in stores lately. Unfortunately the same applies to finding ERB's other books, I have the Barsoom trilogy but the other books elude me. I was fortunate in finding a complete collected Moon Maid trilogy though.

trilogy?

Postby Xenorama » Thu Sep 04, 2008 8:52 pm

there are 11 Barsoom books written by ERB, not a trilogy (though the first three go together so well). good stuff there, so much so some guy "borrowed" some of the names for some small sci fi feature he made in '77.

perhaps with the upcoming John Carter movie we will get some nice new versions. i thought for sure with disney's tarzan we'd get some new omnibus editions, but i reckon they didn't want the kiddies reading about how violent their hero was and that he didn't have a wisecracking ape as a sidekick when young.

David (Greystoke, a "realistic" Tarzan- who wants that?)

I guess I wasn't as clear as I could have been, I know there are more than the 3 books in Burrough's Barsoom series. I have A Princess of Mars, The Gods of Mars, and The Warlord of Mars but the other 8 have proven difficult to find.

I'd love to pick up a copy of Beyond Thirty sometime, it seems like it will be an interesting read.

As much as would like a MOTU movie to make it to the big screen, everything I've read about Mark's script seems like it would've been a bad MOTU movie to me [and in some ways worse than the 1987 film]. It may not have been irredeemably bad, but at the very least I think it needed some major overhauling to be a decent much less good MOTU movie.

I would like to read Marks script though - so I can really see for myself, here's hoping it gets leaked onto the Internet.

I have read Justin Marks Voltron script - and it's terrible and "feels" nothing like Voltron. Its as if Marks took Road Warrior and pasted on just enough Voltron elements to technically call it a Voltron movie.

Sadly Latino Review's El Mayimbe thought that both Marks' Voltron and MOTU scripts were the best thing since sliced bread.

I just read about the remake of Forbidden Planet. If the re-make of The Day the Earth Stood Still is any indication, the FP remake is going to be pretty bad.

Seeing that Silver is the producer already has me concerned - it was his production company that recently hired Justin Marks to script a MOTU movie where Adam doesn't really change into He-Man, and he and Skeletor use high-tech looking katanas.

In any case - Forbidden Planet is a great movie already, the best a remake can hope for is a pale imitation.
