Ummm....I've seen Cloverfield 3 times already, and.....after close inspection and introspection, I give it a ***1/2 out of *****.
Why? well, for it's it's supposed to be, it's good and all, and it's great for a first-time viewing, but once you've seen it, there's nothing memorable afterwards. It's nto the fact that it's not Godzilla or that the film's in a semi-boring format(admit it, these kids talk too much) it's the fact that this film was nothing like the hype suggested.
Too much hype often means something, and I believe in this instance, the hype worked for opening weekend, but not in the long run. This last weekend proved it. If Cloverfield falls even further, it'll show it even more. Abrams had the right idea in the beginning, but it seems that as the film rolled on, he ran out of ideas.
Also, this talk of a sequel involving someone else's camera sounds....fishy. This is the sort of thing you leave for the DVD release, where you can document other people's encounter with the beast, NOT as a full-fledged sequel.
If anything, Kisin/Ki-Shin's release in Japan will at least make Toho stand up and pay attention.
