^ I read somewhere that during Japan's bubble economy you had companies with so much cash they didn't know what to do with it and ended up dumping money into things like animated films with little hope of recouping costs, and the in Akira's case the movie had an enormous budget that, despite doing fairly well, it didn't manage to recoup. If that's the case, it may be that such an elaborate hand drawn feature is and has always been an unlikely prospect and that the film was made just at the right time to be made in the way it was!
Anyway, it'll be interesting to see the new anime and also it's cool that the early Otomo comics will be released worldwide, as I had heard that he dislikes his early work and that was the reason they weren't available.
