If the Hellboy films, Scott Pilgrim, Speed Racer, and Peter Pan (2003) are any indication then this film bombing dramatically increases the likelihood that I'll like it.

Oh, and it bombing means it gets to the dollar theater faster! Sweet.

Loved it!!

I was really curious to see how significant the changes from the book would be, & they were QUITE significant. I realized pretty early on that I would have to give up trying to keep track of the changes & just enjoy the film for what it is: a work BASED on the books. I had to let myself enjoy the parts pulled straight from the books and accept the parts that were completely different.

But that being said, it was quite easy for me to accept the changes b/c they got the most important things right! They nailed the key characters, the overall feel of the world, and most imporatantly, the heart & spirit of ERB's stories!

Also, much like the various incarnations of Zorro or Robin Hood (or more recently, the Bourne books/movies), the changes they did make weren't really better or worse. They were just different so as to make the story more workable for the medium of film. And so now, like those others I mentioned, I have multiple incarnations of the character that are all equally enjoyable, but different enough to feel fresh and exciting.

I actually want to see it again soon. This is the first movie since The Dark Knight I'm actually considering paying to see again in a theater...

Oh, & fwiw, the audience I saw it with really seemed to enjoy it. There were appropriate laughs, gasps, & cheers at all the right moments and even a bit of applause as the credits came up (how often does that happen anymore?).

Here's a thought that struck me over the last day or so -- Andrew Stanton and his team have successfully lived up to the very best of Disney storytelling tradition in making JOHN CARTER.

Think about it, Disney's 1954 adaptation of Jules Verne's 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA is still regarded as the best of that novel. How many times have subsequent adaptations of the book imitated aspects of the '54 movie? And for the sake telling a great story, Walt Disney even put his studio at risk in getting the movie made -- and that has paid off in spades in the decades since.

Whenever the SWISS FAMILY ROBINSON are mentioned, I'd be willing to bet that Walt Disney's 1960 movie is the first thing most people think of. To be sure there are plenty of changes from the book, but Walt Disney was a master storyteller and his efforts are still keeping people entertained today.

I think it's safe to say that if Walt Disney was alive today he would be very pleased with JOHN CARTER.

^ I agree. When I saw the budget, my jaw hit the floor. Even though John Carter has been around forever, its not a very well known property. I haven't come across one person that has even heard of it in my everyday life. Did Disney really expect this thing to bring back at least $500 million worldwide!!? (Remember since studios only keep roughly half the final gross of a film, a movie has to bring back roughly twice its budget to break even).

Anyway since Disney has made a fortune with their Pixar films and the POTC franchise, I think they can weather this storm.

^Well, they're making a second Tintin movie, despite the fact that it didn't make much in the US (it was a smash worldwide, where Tintin is pretty much one of the biggest comics/cartoon characters ever).
