"Favorite" Unmade Films...

Postby MouthForWar » Mon Jul 16, 2012 2:57 am

As we know too well, sometimes films with great potential slip through the cracks and never come to fruition. What are some unmade movies you wish actually got made? You know, the ones you sit around and think about and wish you could have seen...

For me:

Takashi Miike's Daimajin
GDT's At The Mountains of Madness
Vincent Ward's Alien 3
Ridley Scott and James Cameron's Alien 5
Jororowsky and Giger's Dune
Willis O'Brien's unmade works (Creation, War Eagles, The Last of the Labyrinthodons)
Harryhausen's War of the Worlds and The Elementals

- The Roger Corman produced version of Alien.
- James Cameron's adaptation of Battle Angel Alita (let's face it, it's never going to happen).
- , featuring a host of creatures designed by HR Giger.
- The 1930s animated version of John Carter of Mars.
- The Terminator, starring Arnold Schwarznegger as Kyle Reese and Lance Henriksen as the Terminator.
- A version of The Crow where Brandon Lee wasn't killed during production
- Game of Death, as originally planned prior to Bruce Lee's death, including the full pagoda battle
- The Babylon 5 movie
- Aronofsky's version of Robocop
- Return of the Jedi, directed by Steven Spielberg, David Lynch, or David Cronnenberg (and with George Lucas locked in a nuclear bunker until the movie was finalised)

James Whale's Dracula's Daughter would have been a huge improvement on the film that was finally made, based on both the evidence of his other horror pictures and the surviving script and handful of development documents.
Tokyo, a smoldering memorial to the unknown, an unknown which at this very moment still prevails and could at any time lash out with its terrible destruction anywhere else in the world.

In all seriousness, Sam Hamm's script for Batman 2.

Batman taking much of the movie to clear his name was more interesting and it was ultimately a better script than Returns. That said, based on the script alone, it still has some problems that could've been hammered out with another draft and pre-production.

Speaking of unmade films, I guess not too long ago, Hammer recovered some old scripts that had been stolen.

Among them was the aborted Toho/Hammer co-production, Nessie!

My friend told me about a podcast called The Greats Movies Never Made, where they take dive into unmade movies. The most recent episode was about a sequel to John Carpenter's The Thing. I haven't actually listened to the podcast (although it's now on my list of podcast, I just a few other podcasts to go through to get to it), but from what my friend said, it sounded pretty cool. Basically the Thing gets released in a small town and slowly takes over. There was a tense seen of a mom cooking. Crack an egg into a pan, it starts cooking. Crack another egg into the pan it starts cooking. Crack a third egg into the pan and it shrieks and attacks her. Another where a man take a girl to a secluded barn and tells her to close her eyes, you think he's going to Thing-out on her but she opens her eyes to him holding out a ring. He puts it on her finger and then her skin starts to slide off revealing she a Thing.

Nothing can match the original obviously, but this sounded like a neat idea. Like it could have been one of the Dark Horse comic stories.
