"The story would explore Rambo's life before 1982's First Blood."

Sounds like a 'grasping at straws' concept. I mean, c'mon. Rambo's monologue at the end of FB highlights what his life was like after 'Nam and up until the events in Hope, Washington. Given what we know about Rambo from what he tells us, any prequel that fits within Stallone's single sentence description would play out more like an introspective drama; part The Deer Hunter & a lot of Coming Home. Potentially interesting in its subject matter - especially if treated with sincerity and given a solid script and a director who is willing to work with actors who are focused on acting, not a bunch of stunts & F/X setpieces all strung together. Still, hardly a storyline that would feel at home in a action-oriented shoot'em up series like the Rambo franchise.

It's like that Die Hard prequel that Disney aborted after the Fox merger. A pre-Die Hard film about John McClain would have just been about a cop doing his job while his marriage gets strained and she ends up moving with her job to California. While it could be a neat character study, but it would not be what the general populous would expect for a movie in the Die Hard franchise.

I could almost see some one remaking First Blood now and touching upon issues vets are currently facing (or rather have been for ages) but I don't think it could be done with any satisfaction. It'd probably be played safe, maybe even PG-13-ified, and it's message and themes wouldn't straddle the political line properly and end up on the deep end of one or the other to the film's detriment.
