Well, with all this talk of Legendary's troubles it just shows they're not stopping with ambitious projects. Gundam is popular all over Asia, which I'm sure Legendary's Chinese owners like.

I keep reading the announcement and many are saying "first time" but there was a Live action Gundam film done before. G Savior released in 2000.

So, after the rampant box office success of Pacific Rim, Legendary wanted more giant robots?

^ Gundam is so distinct from PacRim or Transformers I don't think there will be a problem in standing out if they do it right.

I'm glad that Legendary is still putting their faith in giant characters. The Gundam franchise has a built-in global fan base going back decades. Hopefully this movie will be good enough to parlay that awareness into a worldwide haul closer to Godzilla or Kong: Skull Island than an original property like Pacific Rim.

They did a live action film for Gundam's 20th anniversary, which did so well, they couldn't wait another 20 years to try it again...

Seriously though, I'd love to see a good live action Gundam Film, but not sure there is a winning solution. I'd like to see an attempt to recreate the original story with Amuro, Char etc... but any deviation form the original would be a source of contention. If they try to do something completely original, that will be a sore spot as well...
