If they followed through on their original idea of having Jim Danforth animate the monsters it would be fantastic for that reason alone, but it seems they decided to go cheaper with man-in-suit effects and who knows how it would have looked? It would have been neat to see a Hollywood film doing kaiju-style monster battles, but in Kong '76 and King Kong Lives we see them wrestle with small practical elements that serve to (consciously or subconsciously) give the feeling of bigness that even cheap Japanese productions usually get right.
