This movie is nuts. It's sadly kind of forgotten, even though it's actually a very important (and influential) moment in the history of the science fiction film.
... and HG Wells essentially supports a kind of fascism governed by science/rationalism, and there's more than a few parallels to the supposed 'good guys' and the encroaching Nazi menace of the time it was made.
