I'm interested in seeing how this goes, but so far every version of 20,000 Leagues after Walt Disney Productions 1954 movie has always been somewhat lacking.
The 1954 movie is directed by Richard Fleischer (son of Max Fleischer, co-founder of Fleischer Studios), had the full support of Walt Disney himself, and featured highly talented actors [including but not limited to] James Mason, Peter Lorre, and Kirk Douglas (all focused on bringing their characters to life). The '54 movie had a lot of care going into it -- I sometimes wonder if the present day movie industry is capable of investing that much into their movies nowadays.
Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?
