I like some of Spike Lee's films, but he doesn't have the subtly to pull off a story like this (the guy is probably one of the most UNsubtle filmmakers out there and almost all of his films end with cartoonishly over the top violent climaxes). He's ballsier than a lot of film makers out there, so he's a better fit than Spielberg, but, as I said, he just doesn't have the subtle hand that someone like Chan Wook Park does.
I like the casting of Josh Brolin, but the fact is this story just isn't Hollywood material and doesn't jive as well with Hollywood film making... Its like when they wanted to make a big budget Hollywood blockbuster of Evangelion. Its just not something that lends itself to mainstream Western sensibilities.
The ending alone is something I can't see any studio willing to run with... they just don't make em like that here, especially these days. The only "recent" exception I can think of is Se7en (not really recent anymore, I know), which looking back, I'm shocked got away with what it did.
Not to mention, of course, the simple fact that this movie doesn't need to be remade to begin with and everyone that is interested in the story has already seen it.
