If you haven't seen "Frankenweenie" then get to it right away!! There's a homage to 'Gamera' and Japanese daikaiju with a giant [stop-motion] monster turtle named 'Shelly' rampaging through the town and a fairgrounds plus other homages to everything from "Rodan" to 'Gremlins' to 'Dracula vs. Frankenstein' and you name it. The film is an absolute blast and the giant turtle monster's rampage is simply brilliant!! Here's a set of character posters which reveal some of the creatures including 'Shelly':

The pterodactyl toy in the beginning has an armored belly strangely similar to Rodan's

I don't think it will put an end to stop-motion either (and I certainly don't think Tim Burton will stray away from that medium), but box-office results can have an effect. One looks at that CGI "Transylvania" movie, and that is doing quite well, which of course, will warrent a meaningless sequel.

I never saw "Pirates! Band of Misfits", but I understand it was well made and well received by the majority of critics (and recall one of them saying it was better than any of the bloated "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies from Disney). I will be sure to check it out.

I've not seen Pirates yet, but I loved the book it was based on.

Real glad to see this was nominated for Best Animated Feature. And in reading the LA Times on Friday, they had a story on how stop-motion is still alive (at least in this aspect as opposed to combining it with live action). Plus, three of the five nominees were stop-motion features.

Finally saw “Pirates: Band of Misfitsâ€

Saw both Frankenweenie and Paranorman when they came out. I liked them both but I actually think Paranorman was the better film. Don't know if I'd consider either "best animated" material though. They were fun, but neither was anything spectacular. But then, I can't think of any animated film this year that I think really deserves an award...

Paranorman was better, and I'd argue it being much better than Frankenweenie.

Just watched this yesterday.
I thought it was fun. It felt like Tim Burton making a Tim Burton film and not a Tim Burton Parody film, if that makes sense. It feels like it could fall right in line with his late 80s, early 90s stuff.
The homages were cool, and many of them done in a well-thought out way, especially the general story progression.

It's amazing to think that in just 80-some minutes, Tim Burton has created a more cohesive, gripping, entertaining film, than in many of his other recent efforts, which had much longer running times.

All in all not a bad movie to watch randomly on a Wednesday night.
Gills.
