I love both the Howling and American Werewolf, but AWIL wins HANDS DOWN as the better movie. Both have great effects, but AWIL's transformation is much better. AWIL has a wittier script and better character development.

And how the hell does AWIL play it straight? AWIL is a lot funnier than The Howling.

Add my preference for AWIL, too.

Count me as a big fan of An American Werewolf in London! I enjoyed that more immensely than The Howling.

David Naughton, Griffin Dunne, and the rest of the cast are great in this one! It's a more modern variation on the Lon Chaney Jr. version, but with a more three-dimensional lead, whose predicament is both hilariously tounge-in-cheek and ominously dark at the same time. Plus, Rick Baker's transformation scene is absolutely classic! Naughton's painful transformation into the werewolf holds up, even in today's CG-driven age.
