not to turn this into s KK thread, but i found it quite ironic how PJ was on camera (in the bonus features of the '33 Kong dvd IIRC) talking about how the 70's KK remake got it all wrong b/c the woman empathized with the beast which took away his tragic nature (a sentiment I agree with) and then did the EXACT SAME THING with his version...

Personally, I think King Kong is his weakest film, but it's self-admitted by the filmmaker himself that the movie is more of a love-note to the original than anything else.

It's just WAY too long, and I've only ever watched it a SMALL handful of times.

As far as the rest of his stuff...I used to think the Lord of the Rings films were a little overrated, until I saw the extended cuts. Honestly, what he leaves us with in the theatrical cuts is the BEST, most heavily edited versions POSSIBLE. They are truly fantastic films.

Frighteners is excellent, just a supremely fun flick.

Dead Alive could easily challenge Return of the Living Dead and Shaun of the Dead for title of "best zombie horror comedy"

Meet the Feebles is one of the most amazingly dark senses of humor on display that i've ever seen...it's SICK and TWISTED and...hilarious. forget dark humor...this is BLACK humor.

Lovely Bones was not his best outing but he pulls off the ethereal world of the afterlife really well and coaxes some good performances out of his actors, i think it's just a matter of the story he worked from...

Never seen Heavenly Creatures or Bad Taste...working on it though...

all in all, he's a good, solid filmmaker, which granted, is a rarity in the world of today, but he's not quite the genius everyone makes him out to be.
Gills.
