I'm not really surprised if Jackson ends up directing The Hobbit. Even though all Jackson's reasons for not wanting to direct the movie[s] make perfect sense, all the problems that held Del Toro back from actually making the movie[s] will likely be equally big road blocks for just about any other director. (I wish Del Toro had actually been able to make the movie, I think he would have done a great job).
I can see where Jackson may feel like he has to take the director's chair if he wants to get the movie[s] made because the "guys with the money" at MGM are just looking for dollar signs and their typical studio exec. view means they want Jackson to direct expecting him to replicate the LOTR movies.
Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?
