that's similar to the plot of the serial "The Secret Code" where the US agent goes undercover as a traitor to the Axis, but the only person who knows he's innocent is killed. he's then on his own! great serial, by the way.

That reminds me of the plot of the Kurt Vonnegut book Mother Night, about an American who lives in Germany and does radio propaganda for the Nazis... but it's actually coded messages for the Allies. It's so secret that we don't cover for him when poeple figure out who he is years later when he lives in New York.
