I just watched Monster last night. Oh my God, it was awful. It started out decent enough, telling the story of two sisters traveling to Tokyo to do a documentary about global warming. But once the destruction begins, it all goes to crap. You never see the monster, not even a blink-and-you'll-miss-it sequence. The tentacles are the only part(s) shown of it, and even then you've got to pay attention to see them. The only scene they're shown "clearly" is in the climactic scene (and no, they never wrap around Tokyo Tower).

And I say "clearly" because, naturally, in the creature's first attack, the sisters' camera is damaged and pixelates/goes fuzzy/cuts out completely on and off throughout the entire film. Naturally, this only occurs during the attacks scenes. When the camera is working fine, they show the sisters crying and whining into the camera a la Blair Witch. I watched about an hour into it before I decided to fast forward through it and see if there was a big centerpiece attack scene or something. While there was, sort of, it wasn't enough to save the movie. Speaking of Blair Witch, the movie ends almost exactly the same way - during the final attack, one of the sisters is screaming the other's name as she looks for her, she finds the other sister (slumped) up against a wall... fade to black.

Ugh.

I'm all for campy monster movies (Zarkorr is one of my favorites), but Monster was just just terrible.

MONSTER may very well be the worst giant monster movie ever made. About the only compliment that can be paid is that at least the two lead actresses were trying. Other than that it's an utterly worthless motion picture. At least I decided to use it as an excuse to have some fun with my review.

I got a funny story about this....

My cousin came back from Cloverfield yesterday, and as she walks in, she tells me she also got it....on DVD. I thought it was a bootleg, so maybe I'd still see it(the bootleg[/i) and want to see it in theatres anyway, so I tell her [i]"let's see it."

She pops it in, the screen loads up, and it crispy clear. then I notice something.....the intro....looks nothing......like....Cloverfield.

We watch the movie in complete AWE....at how freakin' campy the monster's "attacks" are. When that ending came up, after the entire movie.....we were pissed....but for different reasons. Me, because I vowed not to touch this movie with a ten foot pole(specifically because with $400, a camera, some family members, some good video editting software and some food I'm 100% certain I can make a better movie than that), and her because the movie sucked ass after all the marketing and commercials.(If you didn't get it, she thought this WAS Cloverfield). :P

I'll make sure I get her to read TheFoyWonder's review, 'cause it's great and she should get the point through it. :)

I'd like to see what Asylum has to counter "Hancock"....:P
