If you look closely on the R2 cover, you can see rows of Mogeras (Mogeri?) lined up (look right under the title on either side):

I think the idea was they had several of them.

The original design is very cool cuz it's "periodish". In other words very indicitive of 50's sci-fi from the antenae to the "War of the Worlds" like eye rays. I think that's why the 90's version sucked-it lacked much of this retro appeal and was too devoid of personality.

And yeah the overall design was retty clever at disguising the actor-unless they were Kirstie Alley.
