I found this website that has the original American theatrical trailer for Varan, kind of neat.. but the guy pronounces it "Va rahn". I always pronounced it "Vaer-ann" (wish I could do those pronuciation things). But anyway...

and just a quick question..

Was Varan meant to be filmed in 2.35:1 Tohoscope? That is, not matted Tohoscope?

I really need to get a copy of the Japanese version w/ subs :(

This is a neat site too, as it says Varan was issued on video first in the 80's, then again in the 90's (which is the copy I have). What I found really neat was that apparently only the EP copy was sold in stores, and you had to order the SP copy directly from VCI. However, the copy I bought in store is SP.

Anyone have any thoughts on Varan (whichever version)?

That bottom link answers your Tohoscope question

Yeah that was a neat site. I too would like to see the original Varan but don't feel like buying a boot.

Giant Monster Varan is an okay film. Varan is one tough mother in that film. I kept expecting him to die, but he survived attack after attack by the military. It is a little embarassing, though, when you see stock footage from Godzilla (1954), or when Varan's roar turns out to be a slightly remixed version of Godzilla's original roar. However, this film has a terrific score, and some of the music later wound up in Godzilla vs. Gigan.
