Top 10 "Comfort-Food" Kaiju Movies

Postby king_ghidorah » Fri Jun 06, 2014 5:46 pm

What are your Top 10 "Comfort-Food" kaiju movies? The movies you watch when you just want to have fun? They make you happy, even if you're feeling down before the movie starts. You can watch them when you're sick and they make you feel better. They're your go-to films....the ones you watch over and over again. Heck, some of these may never even leave your dvd/blu ray player.

These aren't the "best" kaiju films...you may prefer other kaiju movies to these top 10, but for some reason, you just never really watch those "better" movies. I think the original Godzilla is one of the pinnacles of film making, yet I never watch it and even when I do, it's emotionally investing and even a little draining to watch it. It's a heavy film. It's exactly the type of film that you're not going to find on these lists (from me at least).

So, without further adieu, my list (in no particular order)

King Kong vs. Godzilla
Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster
Son of Godzilla
Gamera vs. Guiron
Gamera Guardian of the Universe
Godzilla 1985
Rodan
King Kong Escapes
Pacific Rim
Daimajin

Lets try this...in no order whatsoever... GoTU, GtB, KKE, Gigan, Mechagodzilla, Rodan, GxMechagodzilla, most Showa Godzilla vs films.. now that i think about it, most kaiju films are my comfort food, so the list of movies that i wouldn't include is probably much shorter. Recently i'm more likely to throw in some random episode of Red Baron and just chill

My absolute no contest number one is Godzilla (1984). Before getting the bluray I had a laserdisc that literally lived in my LD player all through college.

The rest, in no order:

Ghidrah the Three Headed Monster
Godzilla vs The Sea Monster
Godzilla's Revenge
Godzilla vs the Thing
Destroy All Monsters
Godzilla vs Biollante
Godzilla/Godzilla King of the Monsters
Monster Zero
And most recently, Pacific Rim

I will add that for me the vast majority of these, when I'm watching them as "comfort food" movies, I only watch bits and pieces - my favorite parts - for a quick burst of entertainment or happiness, often in a situation where I didn't have the time and/or desire to sit through a whole movie. As an example, I used to leave either G'84 or The Empire Strikes Back in my LD player in college and watch a few minutes of my favorite bits from bed right before going to sleep.

Also, you'll notice that my list is almost entirely Showa Godzilla. This is because childhood nostalgia plays a huge part in the "comfort food" aspect of the films for me. With the exception of King Kong, I didn't really have the chance to see any other studios' (or even Toho's non-Godzilla) kaiju films until college or later.

Well, it might seem close-minded, but nearly all of mine are Godzilla. This is because what I'd consider movie comfort food would be something you grew up watching. You know the movie inside and out because you've seen it over and over or you have some specific nostalgic memory associated with it that makes you just grin. For me, I didn't grow up watching Gamera, or the non-Godzilla films for the most part. I didn't even know most of them EXISTED.

King Kong vs. Godzilla
Mothra vs. Godzilla
Ghidrah, the Three-Headed Monster
Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster
Son of Godzilla
Godzilla vs. Gigan
Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla
Godzilla vs. Biollante
War of the Gargantuas
King Kong '33

Most if not all of these movies are ones I'd watch on the rare occasions I was home sick from school, or just in general over and over as a kid. The exception on that list is probably WotG, which I just remember from seeing on TV on a couple holidays and watching it with my family.
Gills.

No way I can limit it to 10.

... well, pretty much all the '60s - '70s Godzilla films, for one. Additional Godzilla films would be Biollante (a bit dark, but still) and G2K.

The non-Godzilla kaiju films Honda made (aside from Varan and Space Ameoba, that is) and (to wrap-up Honda): H-Man, The Human Vapor, and Atragon.

The first two of Kaneko's Gamera films (I love the third, too, but it's a bit of a bummer).

The Daimajin and Yokai films.

The X From Outer Space.

The kaiju episodes MST3K did.

The original 1966 Ultraman series.

... and from the U.S.: King Kong '33, Mighty Joe Young, 7th Voyage of Sinbad, Jason and the Argonauts, The Mysterious Island, THEM!, and Pacific Rim !
