There is a forbes article complaining about the 3D maneuvering gear and how it looks clunky. lol

I also read someone complaining about the use of RPG's and that technology doesn't mix with the story... the story where people have grappling hooks that are steam/gas powered and send them flying through the air like Superman. Do people think before they talk?

Also people are mad about Mikasa kissing some dude cause that isn't her character. Good thing I don't give a sh*t.

I think it looks pretty good. I was the biggest negative nancy about this movie before it came out but now I am it's biggest supporter. Maybe I am a little biased because I am super stoked that the titans aren't CG effects. Whatever it is I am happy.

*edit* I will say that the 3D gear scenes are quite blatant that they are in front of a green screen. Meh.

Ya it doesn't look real but I feel the non 3D gear scenes look fine. The movie could still be awful and be all talk and no SFX. (submersion of japan) I'm kind of using it as a gauge to see how far Higuchi has come with practical effects. *Looks at G'16.

I can't help but wonder if he will use a giant puppet for Godzilla like he did with the colossal titan. For shots that are torso and up at least. The eyes on the colossal titan are CG and it sells the effects. That wouldn't bother me at all if they did the same approach for Godzilla.

I have to give super kudos to the gore being put in the movie too. If this were Americanized they would have little to no blood.

Depends on what rating an American version would aim for. With it already being a niche thing though, they'd likely shoot for PG13 to attempt to appeal to as broad a range as possible...so yeah, less gore

Here is the first review. Assuming the guy isn't full of crap and really got to see the movie it sounds like they made this AoT it's own thing and it is more of a horror movie with action elements in it. It sounds promising and also gets me excited for G'16. He says that the Titans are somewhat terrifying. He also said it is a lot gorier than the anime which is kind of surprising.

They did say they took a giant dump on Mikasa's character which is going to upset a lot of fans but I feel this guy gave the movie a fair shake considering he wrote it for Anime News Network.

Well I'm definitely still excited. It's great to hear that Higuchi has really used this opportunity to really push the kaiju genre in new directions.

I'm really excited, especially if it breaks away from the manga/anime.

I am also shocked at how Toho is putting so much trust into Higuchi for this movie. It also seems like he has gotten better at his craft. (I'll wait until I see the movie for myself to make a final judgement) Submersion of Japan was such a let down from him because of how boring it was visually. I prefer watching model cities fall apart than watching 2 minutes of blue screen water go through a city with constant shaky cam.

Sounds great - aside from the apparent nerfing of Mikasa, but that might be rectified in Part II. (Even if it isn't, well, I can take the good with the bad.) Thinking about what Higuchi's approach implies for the next Godzilla, I'm feeling pretty excited.

This sounds like a smart move by Higuchi, subverting viewer expectations in an interesting way rather than trying to meet them head-on. I can't wait to see this.

Minor point, but I just realised that none of the Japanese trailers for this movie have shoe-horned in a hideously inappropriate j-pop song. I'm glad they haven't, but that's pretty unusual, isn't it?

So this guys review seems like he is being a little bias towards the movie for making changes to the source material.

"The producers felt that the characters being Japanese and having foreign names wasn’t realistic, so they changed them. And yet the three-dimensional maneuver gear, which is just as unrealistic, is perfectly fine to them. They misunderstood that the movie is its own reality, not ours, and it affected the entirety of the film.”

However there does seem to be a bizarre scene in the movie...

“There’s a sex scene, right in the middle of a titan attack on the town. What would make the producers want to put something ridiculous like that in? It doesn’t add anything to plot and it’s not funny or interesting. All you can do is stare in disbelief with your mouthing hanging open.”

lol? how funny would it be if they used 3d gear while banging?

^^^ To be fair, it was a private comment made public by one of his "friends." He had no intention of it going public.

But they are like too giddy for their own good and sometimes I think non-professional critics that see movies before they come out enjoy the movie for the wrong reasons but WHATEVER there are two "positive" reviews. None of them mention this infamous sex scene in the movie either. I think if you aren't in the mood to see the source material get ripped apart, then this movie won't be for you. I wish I could see it and do an unbiased write up on it. Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

Here is a comment about the "sex scene" from someone who watched it...

"I've just watched it today. Honestly, I don't read manga or watch anime so for me the movie is very good. And that sex scene is not actually a sex scene, cuddling a bit and a kiss. Well, maybe original work fans will hate it. I don't know. I must admit that the movie is very different from the manga. I mean after watching it, I check the plot of manga and I cannot realize what I have watched."

Despite this review being overwhelmingly negative it does seem a little more level headed than the last one I posted. Still, I need to see this movie.

The only positives I read from the review.

"The live-action Attack on Titan movie is from Toho. You know, the studio that brought the world Godzilla. There are scenes at the end with actors in suits fighting in what looks like a miniature city. This is what Toho does best, and these scenes were far more thrilling than any of the movie’s lackluster CG. Attack on Titan is, at its heart, a monster movie. This is what the whole film should’ve been: Actors in suits destroying little buildings. Not computer graphics.

Shame, because in Attack on Titan, it seems like that’s the only thing Higuchi is interested in—filming actors in Titan suits. I know I was more interested in watching them. But there’s something wrong when the film’s best performances are the Titans’. Understandable, because the humans are either bickering, despicable, or worse, boring. If only the movie had more of an edge to it than its 12-and-up rating allows! The romance stuff falls flat and feels like it was shoehorned in to, probably in the eyes of a Japanese studio exec somewhere, make this more palatable as a date movie."

Also, I'm sure Anno is just rolling his eyes at the backlash Higuchi is getting for this movie...

Just got back from seeing this, thought it was fantastic. I haven't read the manga and have only seen some of the Titan action sequences from the anime, so I had nothing really invested in the source material...I can't comment on how different the movie is from the source material, but I can say it seems to faithfully maintain the feel of what I have seen. The effects are excellent and showcase what can be done with a happy marriage of practical and CG effects.

Again, I have no idea how the characters were developed in the source material, but for me in this film none were likable, although you could sympathize with them in their grim situations. The controversial "sex scene" is next to nothing, as has been mentioned...in the context of what was happening at that point in the film (a lull in the action, no Titan attack), it was not unnatural, and was little more than a bit of smooching...simply an attempt at a bit of character development. I really can't understand the attention that very short scene is getting...when it was over, I had to ask myself, "was that the scene that everyone is talking about?"

So yeah, I liked it. It's grim, and it's scary. Nightmares for kids kind of scary. Very gory, too, as has been mentioned. Satisfying ending too, considering it's only part 1. Great action at the end, and I had no idea that one particular Titan was going to come from where it did (trying to avoid spoilers here).

Looking forward to part 2!
