Finally, Funi is releasing Part 1 on Blu-Ray this October!

Even if the movie itself is mush, I'm looking forward to some old-school kaiju action.

Madman Entertainment is releasing the two movies and the 3 episode miniseries set between them in two volumes, maybe we'll get similar releases over here.

After hearing how bad and incomprehensible these films supposedly are, I found myself pleasantly surprised by the first. I thought it was fairly well made and satisfying for what it was. I'm completely unfamiliar with the source material and enjoyed it as a kaiju/tokusatsu fan, and the film certainly delivers from that angle. It's like a post-apocalyptic, splat-punk remix of War of the Gargantuas. Imagine a larger scale, slightly less gory and crazy version of films like The Machine Girl or Tokyo Gore Police and this is that. I really dug it!

When part 2 drops, I'll revisit the first and watch the second...but I've heard some horrible things about 2 and didn't particularly love the first.

I finally saw Part 2 and watched both back to back and it reminded me a lot of the Kiryu duology. The first film has a lot more drama and setting up in it while the second almost immediately jumps into the monster action. If Part 1 is more about the rampaging standard Titans Part 2 is all about the rivalry between the Rogue and Armored Titans with the Colossal Titan between them.

Like Part 1 I found it hit all the right beats for me and there are a lot of cool, satisfying action moments. It's just violent gory mayhem you don't see in a lot of movies now so if that's your thing you should have a good time.

Don't know what to make of this? It states that Warner Brothers is negotiating for the rights (no mention of Legendary, however and and with Thomas Tull out, I would think they have other things on their mind).

I've seen both of the movies and can safely say I don't care for them. The Titan sequences are great and the soundtrack is really good, but little else worked. The root of the problem is that few of the characters act like real people: they range from stilted weirdos and nobodies to melodramatic irritants. Even if/when they acted these ways in the anime, they benefited from time spent on characterization and character development. Also, the anime conveyed a real sense of tension and dread, which could explain and smooth over some of their eccentricities. Tension and dread are largely missing from the films, though, so the characters seem weird for the sake of being weird. And in the films' limited run times, they stay one-dimensional. Sure, we spend plenty of time watching them, but not on them -- it's the difference between observing someone and getting to know them. Eren, Armin, Shikishima, and the rest of the cast are not even fun to observe.

That was really my main complaint. The pacing can test one's patience at times, although this, too, goes back to the characters. Some people mentioned the colour palette earlier, and yes, for the most part, it is far too grey to look appealing. It comes off as a cheap way to create dread and atmosphere, without having to write a script (or film and edit a movie) that does so. The movies diverge from the source material, but the discrepancies didn't bother me much in the end.

One thing I will say: I thought the English dub made the first movie more bearable. I haven't watched the second one with the dub yet -- maybe one day, if I feel bored.
