Well, after watching the trailer for Galgameth, it looks just as bad as Pulgasari. I'm not especially intent on checking it out now, except for curiosity's sake. It's an odd twist of fate for a North Korean anti-capitalist film to be remade as an American children's movie, but there you have it. (Granted, I've heard that Pulgasari is derived from Korean folklore anyway, but still...)

Geez, was it really over 3 years ago we talked about Galgameth? Well, I finished watching it just a few minutes ago. If you have to choose between Pulgasari and it, choose the latter. It has '90s DTV fantasy for kids written all over it (except for a bunch of swearing near the end, for some reason), but it's not excruciating and propagandist. Pulgasari's only advantages are the monster and the setting. Galgameth also doesn't run with the anti-capitalist "iron eater" message. Even though Galgameth eats iron like Pulgasari does, they don't call much attention to how it affects people's lives. The worst that happens is that people use bows and arrows instead of melee weapons. Also, the endings are completely different:
Oh, one more thing: Doug Jones plays the giant Galgameth. I thought some of you might like to know that.

I was given to understand that this film was a remake of South Korean monster film from the 60s that is now lost. Anyone have any info on that, cause I can't seem to dig any up and I can't remember where I read it (It might have been in Phil Hardy's review of Yonggary).
For a film that was made at gun point, this isn't as bad as you'd think.

I think its a pretty good film for the Genre. I care for Pulgasari more then I do at least a short list of other Kaiiju films. I enjoy it. The design is great as well. It's almost like a giant iron bull. The boiling lake and cannon scenes are classic. Love it.

^Since Yongary was almost lost years later (and no longer exists in its original language aside from some sections) it seems plausible.
