Best Kaiju Movies since 'Final Wars'

Postby RaymondBurr » Wed Jun 15, 2011 11:14 pm

I haven't followed the genre much since about mid-way through the Godzilla Millennium series, and am getting back into Kaiju film and tv. I was wondering what kaiju films have come out since the end of the Millennium Era, and more particularly, which ones you like the best out of those films that have inherited the Kingdom since Godzilla went on hiatus. What do you think?

GEHARA. It's only 20 minutes long and it's basically the best thing since the Gamera trilogy ending.

In terms of Japanese kaiju eiga, it's easily Gamera the Brave, though the first Ultra Battle movie was really awesome, too.

However, in general terms, I can't disregard Cloverfield. That was truly an amazing achievement, in my opinion, for monster movies.

Also, yeah, every Ultraman movie from Ultraman the Next onwards is generally pretty damned good, The Next being the best, easily.

Full Length:
Gamera The Brave
Monster X Strikes Back
Death Kappa

Daikaiju Shorts:
Gehara
God of Clay

Really, this "genre" is dead at the moment. Gamera The Brave was the last "real" Daikaiju film, while the other two full length films, Monster X Strikes Back and Death Kappa are crappy "comedy kaiju" films, but do have some good kaiju moments hiding within. Gehara is a awesome little short kaiju film that does the comedy right while still giving an awesome kaiju. God Of Clay is new short kaiju film with no DVD or Blu Ray release yet.

Some God of Clay information: http://www.scifijapan.com/articles/2011 ... s-angeles/ Waiting for the blu ray release of this one!
