Ifukube's haunting themes. The period piece settings. The monster golem's relentless wrath.

The Daimajin films are indeed movie gems, though generally overlooked when considering the classic kaiju films. Let's discuss the Daimajin trilogy.

:?: Some of you guys never saw these movies??

What are you waiting for? Godzilla to come back? Get over it !! These are AWESOME "Daikaiju" flicks, you'll all love them! And with the Ifukube music that should make some of you feel right at home. I can't say enough good things about this trilogy. Fantastic work from Daei.

I think I'll watch one over the weekend now ...

I made a thread on this a few years ago asking if they were worth buying. Not one person said no. ADV Films ran a special where they were selling each movie $5 bucks each. Friend got them for me for my Bday. Best gift ever. However I have to say the first is the best. But the rest are fine too.

God I love it when he drags those chains through a bunch of buildings.

I freaking love Daimajin. The first film is by far my favorite, while the second one is pretty good too. The third I honestly find to be rather weak, but an enjoyable enough viewing on occasion, what with the gorgeous cinematography. As a whole, I think they're fantastic. Excellent effects, sufficiently engaging plots, wonderful music, and pretty much everything you could want from a movie of this kind.

My personal favorite moments include the aforementioned dragging of the chains through buildings, Majin's sudden casting out of the flames just when the villains think they're safe, and that terrific "Are you done yet?" impression he gives off after they launch the boulders at him. And, of course, the villains' ultimate fates. If you haven't seen these films, do yourself a favor and track them down. They're among the best in the genre.

Which one is the one with the kids who go to the mountain? The second one? Think that's my personal fave...crap...the first is all sorts of awesome too though...guess those two are tied to me.

That's the third film in the series.

Count me among the Daimaijin fans! I thought it was a great blending of the samurai and kaiju genres.

Ed Godziszewski wrote an excellent article about how Daiei developed and produced the Majin films. Anyone who wants to know about the series should find it a worthwhile read:

Beyond the original "Godzilla", it doesn't get much better than the Majin films. They are among the best ever. Ifukube's contribution was icing on the cake. It was not a stretch to consider the improvements made to the Gamera films of the 90's compared to the original series. Majin would be much more difficult to improve upon.
