Kaiju Awareness

Postby lhb412 » Tue Jun 12, 2007 3:54 pm

It just occured to me that when I was little (about untill the age of ten) the only non- Godzilla kaiju films I had seen were King Kong Escapes and Rodan. I was aware of Mothra but I'm pretty sure I had never seen it all the way through (I think maybe I saw my cousins watching it while visiting as a very small child).

Of course I turned ten in '98, got the Godzilla Compendium which mentioned several other Toho flicks and I saw Gamera GOTU on cable.

Sooooo.... what was everyone else's understanding of other kaiju as kids?

i had seen two Godzilla movies- KING KONG VS GODZILLA and SMOG MONSTER (on tv) and the next kaiju film i saw was YOG, MONSTER FROM SPACE. this would have been about 72, so i was aware of other giant monsters pretty early on.

I was born at a time when kaiju books were becoming popular here in America, so even before I saw any non-Godzilla kaiju films, I knew many existed. So I guess I've always been aware... :?

I read about the other Kaiju films in the extremely inaccurate Godzilla, King of the Movie Monsters. I think the first one I saw was Rodan (which I purchased because I had seen Monster Zero and was like "HEY, it's Rodan!".)
Then Mothra, and so on and so forth.
There are still a few Toho Scifi films I've yet to see, but most of the kaiju films I've seen...except Dogora.
