I CANNOT BELIEVE I LET A BUNCH OF POMPOUS FANBOYS AFFECT MY JUDGEMENT ON THIS WONDERFUL MOVIE. I always kept hearing how these movies weren't that good, overrated and crappy by Godzilla fanboys that said these films weren't
''anything special''. However, I never took into consideration what they said that much because they don't seem to watch ANYTHING outside the kaiju genre and Godzilla films (pathetic!). THE MYSTERIANS is a great Japanese Sci-Fi movie! I loved it! Loved it! I LOVED THE STIFF GAIJIN ACTORS! Especially when they're speaking Japanese! I've noticed that a lot of them appear in other Japanese Sci-fi films, including kaiju too. I just loved everything about. I never found it dull or boring, or the be draggish.
WHY THE HELL IS THEIR STOCK FOOTAGE OF THIS FILM IN KING KONG VS. GODZILLA? I noticed this when show Japanese civilians heading towards some boats while evacuating and the mini-space ship thingie. Good movie and love the concept of aliens taking over our world for our women.

The Mysterians kickas ass. One of Honda's best and a true classic.
And the Japanese version of King Kong vs. Godzilla doesn't have stock footage from it. Its only the wacked out American version.

Yep, I concur with the above poster regarding Matango. It's a great flick. It has a wonderfully unsettling vibe to it. And you you ever get the chance, seek out 'Battle in Outer Space'. (that is, if you haven't seen it already) That's another good one. It's a fair bit like 'The Mysterians', only with a faster pace - and some cool space battles.

GET MATANGO GET MATANGO GET MATANGO- This is one of the best movies I've ever seen... yes... and most definitley one of the best Japanese horror/kaiju films ever made. Probably Honda's best film after only the original Godzilla. This is also the film that Honda thought was his best. It was his own personal favorite and for good reason (being that it kicks ass).
Battle In Outer Space is great too, that's the sequel of sorts to the Mysterians.
PS- Who the hell says these movies "aren't anything special?" What fanboys say that? Seriously, these are classics. Its probably the same "fans" that think Kaneko is better than Honda, and trash movies like Monster Zero... some "fans"

I had never actually seen THE MYSTERIANS back in the early 70s when I saw most of my Toho films. For some reason, it never seemed to be a part of the package that my local and cable stations carried. But I knew about it because of a fantastic British monster encyclopedia I got when I was about 7, and it had a picture of Mogera and a listing for the film.
Fast forward 20+ years when I started to get into the fandom, and people were always raving about THE MYSTERIANS. When I finally saw it, I'm afraid I thought it didn't really live up to the hype, and somewhat agree that it can be long, talky and a bit boring. When I saw the Region 2 DVD, however, it went up a couple of notches in my book. The colors are beautiful, and it's got to be one of the most vibrant Toho films of its time. I love the design work of the ships, weapons and costumes, and the main theme is one of Ifukube's most exciting pieces.
In the end, I prefer BATTLE IN OUTER SPACE, another one that I hadn't seen until recently, and seemed to have less hype attached to it.

The Mysterians is a somewhat entertaining film once you get past all of the talking. It can get boring at times, but it makes up for it with some cool action sequences.
MATANGO is a must see. I actually watch it like I'd watch a zombie movie... because it's rather similar in a lot of ways. I'd say it's the japanese counterpart to Night Of The Living Dead as far as social message, except with mushroom people instead of zombies.

The Mysterians is considered a classic film for pretty much, the same reason that a film like Dracula is. It has a bunch of memorable moments, or set-pieces that fans cannot resist. Much like Bela Lugosi created an irresistible Count Dracula, the team of Honda, Tsuburaya, Ifukube, etc. made a film that relies more on money-shots than anything else. Under close scrutiny, it's pretty apparent that there's a alot of dead space in The Mysterians. No real motivation for the characters, nor any real developement to their personalities. Realistically, it's not one of the best movies that Honda ever did, but it's still a damn-fine movie, because it's so memorable. It's got a first-class opening act with Moguera, wacky aliens in colorful Nascar helmets, lots of explosions, and cool-looking battleships that inspired pretty much everything we see in the science fiction films today. And then, there's the Markalites! Honestly, can you really hate on a film with all of this stuff (I suppose you could if you were a snobby-ass wannabe film critic)? It's right behind Mothra '61 and Matango, if you ask me.
