Mechanikong on the Muppet Show?!

Well, my little brother had his birthday over a week ago, and one of his gifts was the Muppet Show first season DVD set. Well, tonight we were watching an episode, and a Muppet Labs sketch came up, in which Dr. Bunsen Honeydew was showing off his latest invention, the Muppet Labs Gorilla Detector:

Dr. Honeydew goes on to explain how the Detector can keep you and your family safe from gorilla attacks, and sure enough, a gorilla shows up and starts smashing the machinery. Dr. Honeydew explains how the creature can't be a gorilla, as the Detector isn't going off. The gorilla soon grabs Dr. Honeydew and pulls him off-screen ("So I know, scientifically, that I am not being eaten by a gorilla..."), and the Detector finally lights up:

After a few seconds, the gorilla rushes back. It grabs the Detector, raises it over its head, smashes it down onto the ground, and proceeds to stomp on it repeatedly.

...

Well, as you might imagine, my reaction was pretty much "HOLY CRAP MECHANIKONG!!"

I wonder if it was intentionally designed after Mechanikong, or if it was just one amazing coincidence. Though I can't imagine how it could be...

I know one of the guys who worked on THE MUPPET SHOW. He was the inspiration for Honeydew's assistant Beaker (seriously) and he's a HUGE Toho fan.

... My guess is your discovery is not a coincidence.

I've seen this years ago, and was absolutely amazed!

I have the First Season of The Muppet Show (I'm a big Muppet fan) on DVD, and may check out this episode!

And thanks, Keith, for that little tidbit!

Wanna know something just as cool? The Muppet Labs playset made by Pallisades Toys a couple years ago came with not only a Beaker figure, but several pieces of 'lab equipment'- including a replica of said 'gorilla detector'! (I can see the stampede beginning to toy dealers/ebay now....)
