the inference is that there were Frankie cells that grew into the Gargantuas- the US version says that. Frankie never turned into Sanda.

That is merely an inconsistency in the screenplay. War of the Gargantuas is, in fact, a sequel, nay, a continuation of Frankenstein Conquers the World. However, the filmmakers did a pretty poor job of making that connection. Perhaps it was because of the death of Nick Adams that they had to deviate so much, but as the films are, I like to consider them two seperate stories.

Nick Adams didn't pass away in 1966, when WOTG was produced (he passed away in 1968). The transition between FCTW and WOTG is explained in my essay on my blog:

I've seen both recently, and I think I enjoyed Gargantuas overall more.

I do think Frankenstein Conquers The World does have some strong things going in its favor, such as Nick Adams. He's just way more into this film than Russ Tamblyn is. Easily. And I think that enthusiasm totally puts FCTW as the better film, even if I did enjoy Gargantuas more.

Lots of people think Goldfinger is one of the best ever made in the Bond movies, and I can see the merits there.

But when I want to actually enjoy a Bond movie, I actually get a kick out of For Your Eyes Only and Thunderball in comparison.

So there you have it.

I do think WOTG has lasted so long because of its iconography (not that I mind here, since I love that movie too.).

Just watched WotG, and here's my compare/contrast of the two Toho Frankenstein films:

These films have two directors: Honda and Tsuburaya. In Gargantuas we have a lackluster Honda half (he said as much himself) and a terrific Tsuburaya half. Really, the monsters personalities and designs are so conceptually strong that it does more than enough to carry the whole film. Nakajima's performance as Gaira is terrific.

Frankenstein CTW is a much more slap-shod production, with some interesting/crazy ideas that often make no sense on a logical level, but in this one both Honda and Tsuburaya produce infectiously enjoyable halves, producing a film that's stronger overall, even if it lacks the highs of the more inspired moments of Gargantuas.

I am far and away a FCTW fan as opposed to a WotG fan. Frankenstein has a little bit of a clunky narrative on paper, in that the appearance of Baragon has no direct connection to Frankenstein, and the two plot threads aren't interwoven as carefully as they might have been, but the human characters are written with clearer motivations, the actors are much more invested in what they're doing, and the atmosphere is far more effective.

WotG aims for an emotional impact that it never comes close to achieving, at least for this viewer, whereas FCTQ gets to me every time.
