Rodan always struck me as bland and with no distinct personality... the Larry Fine of kaiju... when I first made that statement I did not realize that Rodan does just that in G:T3HM..... Mosura shoots Godzilla in the face.... Rodan laughs....
only to get a pie in the face from Mosura as well.

Rodan is Larry Fine!

The 93 one was cooler though,

Just like to say that I rewatched Rodan for the first time in a few years and I must say I love it even more!!!! I never noticed just how beautuful some of the camera work was, especiallly in the mines and during the hatching scene, which is my favorite scene in the whole movie. It just rocks! Their's this part comical/surrealest, part completly terrifying aspect of being right next to a giant, hatching egg, and the scene does is beautifully!

Awesome movie, a masterpiece no doubt.

PS- About the US opening for the movie: that clip of the atom bomb test on all those battleships, does that scene freak anyone else out?!

The original Rodan was pretty cool, but I have a big problem with all the subsequent Rodans in Godzilla films (Except for Rodan in G vs MG93). When Rodan was flying in those movies, all was cool. He was sleek, elegant, and destructive. But on the ground, Toho definently used a different costume because the beak drooped down in a weird manner. It kinda made Rodan look like Jimmy Durante.\

Rodan is definently one of the cooler monsters. I'd love to see a remake too!

It would be easier to ask if someone did not like Rodan. What's not to like? If ever a monster needed an expanded story, it's this one.

I dunno, much like the kaiju Anguirus I'm not sure what attracts everyone to Rodan so much. While he's "okay", to me he's just a big bird. He flies around and..uh, blows stuff up. In the Showa series he has a really ugly mug and in the Heisei series he was suffering from rigor mortis. If you like him, great! But to me I'd rather see the return of a really unique kaiju like, say, Gigan.

Did you see Rodan 1956? That movie is a true classic of the time. I like Anguirus and Rodan because they are "simple" kaiju, unique, but not completely crazy.

Maybe the movie is a classic, but I'm just talking about the kaiju himself--you're right, he is "simple" and if that's what makes him appeal to you, great--but he just doesn't seem vivid enough to really catch my attention as anythong other than a Toho pterydactyl (sp?).

Well...he's supersonic! And he's got that nobility thing going. I mean, that Godzilla, pssh, he's just a Toho T-rex with spikes and fire breath, right?

Don't take it so personally, Ang! I suppose, but frankly, yeah, Godzilla is just a Toho T-rex with spikes and fire breath. While he has become interesting as a result of 50 years worth of multiple character development, when it comes right down to it Godzilla in physical form is one of the less-inspired kaiju out there.
