Yeah, there isn't a whole lot of whale worshipping, but there is one odd scene that features the villagers dancing in a kind of strange way, that may have been a ritual of some kind. Other than that the actual Whale God monster is seen as more of a threat to their community than anything else.
And I agree that the whale effects were as good or better than the Moby Dick effects.
