It's from a Daiei project before Gamera. I cannot tell you what film it was or if the project was even actually made (i.e. the Daiei Giant Rat movie).

Ah... that figure is of the creature "Kyogyu" (Colossal Ox), one of the supernatural beasties from Daiei's big-budget period spectacle O'OEYAMA SHUTEN DOJI (1959), directed by Tokuzo Tanaka. The film features an all-star cast, headlined by three of Daiei's greatest actors: Kazuo Hasegawa, Raizo Ichikawa and Shintaro Katsu.

It's a pretty good film, actually, and its one of the rare Jidaigeki (period dramas) that exploits the deep pool of supernatural tales and creatures of Japan. The other creatures that appear in the film include "Tsuchigumo" (Ground Spider) and "Ibaraki Doji"...

O'OEYAMA SHUTEN DOJI was first issued on home video in Japan back in the early 1990s (if memory serves me), and has yet to be issued on DVD.

Hope this helps!

I saw the trailer for Ooeyama Shuuten Douji. It looks really cool! It's also really scary stuff for its time. The Kyogyuu was really impressive (the guttural groaning sound it made was eerie), as was the giant spider and that flying demonic head. It was also interesting to see Shintarou Katsu with his eyes wide open (that is, a few years before playing the closed-eyed Zatouichi)! Ichirou Saitou (who, IMHO, equals Akira Ifukube in musical quality) does the music score (though the trailer probably used one of his past film scores).

I hope they put this film out on DVD (they probably will)!

If anyone knows where I can see/get this, please PM me.

Now that that's out of the way, has anyone seen The Whale God? Its about a giant whale kaiju and its by Daiei, that's all I know. Here's a pic of a figure of the monster.

And can anyone tell me anything about War of the Insects?

Darnit. I WANT GIANTS! Well for anyone wondering, here's a picture of Orion's figure for one of the bees from War of the Insects. Looks pretty neat, even if they aren't kaiju sized. I might check this film out one of these days:
