the Mystery of the Secret of the Telegian

just got in a copy of this from a friend of mine. it's from an old Sinister Cinema tape, made from a strange b/w version of the movie:



it runs 85 minutes, instead of the standard US one that ran 75 minutes.



weird, huh? i haven't watched this movie in about ten years, so i am looking forward to seeing it, even in this form.

This was available on VHS from Sinister for a long time, but there’s no longer any entry for it on their website nor in their paper catalog. They have updated VHS titles to DVD-R before so maybe you should send Greg an email about it. Their copy is the black and white “American release,” which itself was the Toho export version with the distributor’s logo tacked on the end. It was uncut, even with visible nude centerfolds. I wouldn’t be surprised if the edited American release mentioned in earlier posts was just cut down from this version by a TV station and not some “official” alternate version.

Is there any reason why this and The Human Vapor have not been released in the US on DVD subbed?

MGM has the rights to Vapor and Gorath, right? Not sure about Telegian. MGM just hasn't shown interest in the titles and a third party label would have to work with both MGM and Toho to put out a quality release, so it would be like licencing the film twice over, which could keep costs prohibitive.

It might be like Columbia and Mothra, etc. where the license is perpetual. MGM wasn’t the original distributor, they’ve got these titles through a succession of distributors since the original ‘60s releases in the U.S. That they have the rights more than fifty years since their initial releases I think it’s a safe bet the license won’t expire.
