Just recently watched Yongarry and Reptilicus...

It was the first time I was able to see either film.

On Yonggary - the dub had me laughing all the way through the movie - I even caught myself MSTing the movie at time [hey look it's Barney Fife]. The music score had me laughing too - most notable was the piece they kept repeating that was started off just like one of Ifukube's scores but quickly switched to alternating notes.

The suit design was interesting, the lighted eyes and horn were nice touches. I'm probably wrong, but I don't think Toho implemented glowing/lighted eyes until the Heisei G films.

I knew about Yonggary's death scene from reading here at MZ but I was still surprised when I saw it in the movie...really it's just to awkward for words...

On Reptilicus- The first thing that struck me about this film was it's the type of giant monster/kaiju film the average Joe thinks of when they believe they're thinking of Toho's daikaiju films. Overall not a bad story, the regenerative abilities of the monster added a decent bit of depth it. Copenhagen isn't exactly high on the list when you think of cities likely to be attacked by a giant monster, but it served well enough.

Instead of the fantastic daikaiju made by Toho - the films producers used far smaller marionnette which could've easily been at home in a Thunderbirds episode. I don't think it was very big at all - since all of the up close shots of Reptilicus were just of the head portion. 'Distance' shots with the whole creature seen were obviously on miniature sets - the buildings seemed a good bit smaller than those pictured in the Thunderbirds [obviously to enhace Reptilicus's size].

In a nice change of pace from the typical fire breathing giant monsters 'inspired' by Gojira, Reptilicus spits an acid.

And of course the movie ends with a cliff hanger when one of Reptilicus's still living feet is pictures twitching under the ocean.

I'm pretty sure I'd like to track both of these down someday to expand my movie collection - provided I can find decent DVDs.

well, STARZ showed a nice print of Yongary (that's the way the original is spelled) and MGM put out a great print of Reptilicus. both are fun movies even if not the greatest monster movies ever.
the green slime Repti spits was added only for the US version, and his flying scenes were cut from the US version. i've seen them, they aren't as awful as some people had led me to believe (mostly critics, i mean cry-ticks). most of Reptilicus was also redubbed, since the heavy Swedish accents of the phonetic English was hard to understand.
and one of the coolest parts of the movie, the musical number "Tillicus" was left out complete of the US version. it was sung by the handyman, who was a local comedian (which is why he's got such a part in the movie). it makes the mind wobble when heard and seen.

Luckily, that's easy nowadays, because there is a very nice out which I bought about a year ago. (just scroll down) you can see some screenshots from the Danish and the American version. The last picture shows the performance of the infamous "Tilicus" song which was mentioned by Megaloman. By the way, the name of the comedian was Dirch Passer -- considering available in Denmark he must have been incredibly popular at that time.
