Monster Zero x SciFi Japan - Archive Only

On reddit there's a post about the running time of all the movies, both US and Japanese run times. The Showa series had theatrical releases in the US, which were usually edited in some manner. So it makes sense when most of those have different times. But Heisei and Millennium movies were barely touched, aside from G'84 and G2K (again theatrical releases with edits) to my understanding. I can kind of understand a few minute difference in the Heisei series if they chop the credits off their count of the time, which I think Sony did for most of the DVD/Bluray releases of the movies.

But two stick in my craw.

Godzilla X Megaguirus - Japanese 105 minutes, US 88 minutes
GMK - Japanese 105 minutes, US 85 minutes

Twenty minute difference. Like is the Japanese cut counting the Hello Kitty short that went before the movie in the theater? Because if there are cuts of GMK and Megaguirus that are 20 minutes longer, I really want to see them.

I'm not sure what source they're using. I imported both movies on Region 3 dvds from Hong Kong long before they were officially available in the U.S. While I've long since gotten rid of those discs I don't remember anything missing on the U.S. discs once they came out. And twenty minutes of missing footage would have definitely caught my attention.

Come to think of it, I had a bootleg VHS of megaguirus sourced from a Japanese copy. And, again, it didn't have any additional footage that's not in the current us discs.

The back of my Sony Blu-Rays say 106 and 105 minutes apiece.

If I were to hazard a guess, maybe they're referring to the edited down versions that premiered on SyFy in the '00s?

The Reddit post probably took the runtimes from Toho Kingdom, which considers the 2003 Sci-Fi premieres the initial U.S. release of either film.
