Godzilla Movie Tournament

I made this for another forum after being fed up with all the "monster debate" threads that were saturating it. Instead of pitting monsters against each other, I thought it might be interesting to pit movies against each other. In addition I used a bracket just to make things sort of fun and interesting. So far it's been a wonderful success talking about movies and comparing them and I thought it might spark some interesting opinions here.

I found a website that randomizes lists, so the movies being pit against each other are largely not my choice with the exception of 6: 4 movies I switched out because I thought it would make for better discussion and the last 2 I tacked on just so I could use the 32 team bracket. I normally let votes or "debates" go on for two or three days depending on the responses and then reveal the next match.

It's interesting to observe and has been good for some healthy conversation. If it's not your thing, no worries. If it seems like fun, join in. Simple as that.

GxMG for the fun factor. Usually i'd throw in the miniatures as big plus for this film vs most other heisei and millennium films, but Return has some pretty nice miniatures.

Return of Godzilla for its magnificent miniature effects and atmosphere. I do enjoy Mechagodzilla '02 but no.

RoG. Like kiryugoji said, the atmosphere hasn't been matched.

RoG by a mile. A badass G, fantastic score, heart-wrenching ending, and atmosphere in spades.

GxMG. I side with it for its likeable characters, take on Mechagodzilla, and, as Klen said, fun factor. ROG has a lot going for it, but I have problems with its story and some of the Godzilla effects. And in general, I just don't think as highly of it as I do of GxMG.

GxMG for me. I think it's more fun and Godzilla routinely looks better (the RoG design is only good from certain angles) AND I think the score in GxMG is great so RoG doesn't have an obvious leg up anywhere for me.

I think I've given that round adequate time. Lets go for a hilariously interesting Game 2.

Godzilla Final Wars VS. Godzilla x Megaguirus

GFW. Easy for me. I've said a lot of things about GFW fairly recently, so I'll just leave it with my vote for GFW.

Both of those are awful but I think I'd take Final Wars.

Gotta give it to GxM. I like the suit, and I like the scene with the Meganulon swarm attacking G. It also has less of the Matrix-style filler that makes GFW suck so hard IMO.

GxM. I'm one of the few people on this earth that actually enjoy this movie.

Both films are garbage but I'm saying GFW because it brings back a lot of my favorite Showa kaiju. Also Gigan looked pretty sweet and Anguirus was fun if not brief.

100% GFW. Despite its massive flaws, it's the far better monster romp. Plus I've come to hate the spiky Godzilla suits.

Megaguirus - both films are pretty low in my list, and there are more things I like about FW than Megaguirus, but there are more things I strongly dislike in FW. So I'll pick Megaguirus for having less blockbuster ripoffs, mutants, and embarrassingly bad stereotypes

This is a really cool idea.

GFW and Megaguirus are both pretty bad and rather low on my list. I'd probably go GFW right now.

I actually like both movies, but I'll go with GFW. Kazuki Kitamura, Don Frye, Akira Takarada, and of course, the Goji-GINO fight.

Final Wars is a balls-to-the-wall blast of a good time. Godzilla vs. Megaguirus is a snoozefest. GFW all the way.

GxM because it's less offensive than Final Wars.

I also vote Megaguirus. I like both films, but don't love either. GFW does have don frye going for it. But GxM has one of my favorite versions of Godzilla, I think Megaguirus is a cool monster (if poorly executed), and it feels more coherent overall. It also feels a lot like a 70's Godzilla movie to me, in a good way. GFW spends way too much time ripping off Hollywood action movies and wasting it's potential (of which it has a TON)...

Also, I'm glad RoG won round one since I just found this thread. I'd have to reconsider my membership here if GxMG had beaten on of my absolute favorites!

Godzilla: Final Wars barely wins 7 to 6.

Game 3

Godzilla vs. Gigan VS. Godzilla vs. Hedorah
