Check out SciFi Japan for an exclusive interview with GODZILLA 2000 (US version) producer/writer Michael Schlesinger about the unmade sequel GODZILLA REBORN, which would have been shot in America by Sony Pictures but feature special effects by Toho’s FX artists.

Well.... This would have been interesting. I'm surprised it was shrugged off so quickly.

its crazy thinking how many more Godzilla movies we could have had..

Interesting. I love the title though. Godzilla Reborn? Sounds powerful. Not sure it could be relevant without Godzilla dying or without a series reboot, but I still love it.

Very cool read! Though I have to agree with Toho about nixing the "killing Godzilla off just to clone him later" bit... that just doesn't work for me. Otherwise sounds like it could have been a nice alternative to MEGAGUIRUS.

Sounds like it could've been decent. One nagging question: how exactly was the Army going to kill Godzilla or put him in a coma? Neither option really seems great to me on the surface, but I also don't want to assume it would've been GINO 2.0. Otherwise, I think the movie would've been fun if it had been made. And If they'd actually gotten Bruce Campbell on board to star in it, that would've been a dream come true.

This sounds like it would have been awesome. Joe Dante and that cast... doing a traditional Godzilla movie? THAT'S A SEQUEL TO GODZILLA 2000?!

We could have had THIS instead of Megaguirus?!

So this is going to be yet another thing the segment of this fandom that loves never made movies is going to obsess over for years, isn't it?

I shudder to think of TK's reaction to this.

That was fascinating! Kinda sad we didn't get this film as it sounds really awesome - especially the thing about a Hollywood production and budget with Japanese effects crew! As for killing Godzilla or putting him in a coma... They kill him in the original, and GMK (kinda). They put him inn a coma of sorts in G'85 and even GvsBiollante to name a few. So it's not like there's not a precedent for that sort of thing. Especially having him wake up and be the victor.

I'd also like to point out that I think Mike was completely SPOT ON with his assessment of the legendary Godzilla. Exactly how I felt about the film.

you nailed it right on the head Klen7 with those military comments. Being nigh unkillable from military power is just part of the genre ._. And even in movies where the military has a fighting chance (Gargantuas etc), it's really damn complicated.

There's not much in this movie I'd like to see. The military killing Godzilla and then deciding to clone him is especially stupid. No thanks. The other stuff sounds like typical fan fare, minus what are supposed to be interesting characters. Maybe they would be interesting, but I could care less about the premise.

I would have liked to have seen the Godzilla 2000 universe continued. However, there are some aspects of this story that are a cause for concern. The characters seem, as portrayed, a bit cartoonish. This 'tone' is somewhat reminiscent of Sony's treatment of Godzilla 2000 Millennium. I'm not against humor. It's kaiju films being reduced to parody to keep western audiences engaged I cannot accept. If the story is well-written, and the effects work reflect a $20 million budget, the audience should be able to get on board, so to speak. It can be fun, but played straight at the same time. I believe that in the right hands, and with some imagination and creativity, a journey through the 'Mirenium' universe could have been colorful, thrilling and thought provoking.

Why it doesn't surprise me that Sony cancelled the Godzillla 200 sequel? Maybe it has to do with the way Sony cancelled the anti American film, The Interview.
