Simple as that. Which tag teams were the toughest and came closest to beating Godzilla (and if he lost, how much of a fight did they give him). Rank them, or choose the best, it doesn't matter. As for me, I have a hard time choosing the number 1 but it juggled between Gigan and King Ghidorah and Mechagodzilla and Titanosaurus.

When Godzilla took on these two without a sidekick, I thought it was outstanding how the battle played out. "Terror of Mechagodzilla" hands down.

It's nice to see the Mutos ranked the way they are, and it's pretty much how I feel about their position in the rankings, though I'd give them a higher position than Gigan and Megalon (even if they are well known).

I went with Ghdiroah & Gigan because the film carried off the tag-team aesthetic the best.

I agree with you there. While the Mutos may not have had the more serious factor, I'll add on that Titanosaurus and Mechagodzilla just as character concepts are more threatening than the two Mutos.

Hope to see some merchandise of the Mutos somewhere down the line.

It is nice to see Ghidorah and Gigan still ranked so high. Godzilla vs Gigan truly felt like a big come back win you'd see in pro wrestling (which in itself is a storytelling form).

Gigan and Ghidorah without a doubt. Vs titanoaaurus and MG the military kept titano distracted for the most part though Godzilla faces them one on two otherwise.

Godzilla had mothra's help to take out gigan so the monster x battle is mooted before we get into the gotengo aid.

Mothra and Battra were no match for godzilla independently.

Vs Ghidorah and gigan we not only had to contend with two of the most powerful adversaries in the history of kaiju who could both hold their own against multiple opponents and one who was the first to make Godzilla bleed, there was also that damned tower that fired the most powerful ray seen in the series besides ToMG's head removed laser, SMG's plasma grenade, and Hesei/final goji's hyper beam, the absolute zero cannon, super x-2's reflection beam and maybe MKG's central triple beam gravity dream. If not for the aid of some ingenious hippies it may have been over for Earth.

My vote doesn't match my speel since I didn't read about which came closest to winning. Also what is this King Ghidorah Mothra tag team you speak of. If its not a typo is it final wars? I haven't rewatched it in 10 years but plan to on the new blu ray when I finish catching up. Just finished kraken's and have half the sony's to watch.

Jesus how did I forget that. My memory isn't that bad honest. I've only seen kanekos film about 100 times. Maybe I'm not used to that immature Ghidorah being called king. Or could it be I'm still salty from being cut along with varan. & who do they keep but the inexplicably popular in Japan baragon

Boy, you could REALLY make an argument for the MUTOs. They're the one team on there that's quite clearly better TOGETHER than acting on their own, use tag-team tactics to near-perfection, and don't start in-fighting with each other when things turn sour.

But I gotta go with Gigan and King Ghidorah.

Overall, I'd say MechaGodzilla 2 and Titanosaurus. MechaG2 firing various projectiles and explosives while Titanosaurus went hand-to-hand with Godzilla made for some effective teamwork, and when Titanosaurus was being distracted by the sound waves, MechaG2 held his own pretty well.

Gigan and King Ghidorah would be the second best. Gigan being fast while King Ghidorah was slow made them very well rounded, and opposed Godzilla and Anguirus' abilities well. Not to mention, they really destroyed those cities.

I know a lot of more snarky people don't count King Ghidorah and Gigan's destruction in vs Gigan, because it was stock footage. But when you really look back and add it all up, they REALLY "OH GODZILLA! WHAT TERRIBLE LANGUAGE!" up Tokyo and the surrounding areas, and the Self Defense Forces. I've said it before here on this forum, but I think this was probably one of the highest tolls on Tokyo in the Showa era, save for Gojira and DAM. And I still think this is THE biggest routing of the Japan Self Defense Forces in ANY Godzilla movie. They threw everything they had on them and got wrecked.

I think most of these were pretty formidable fights, especially the 70's films, but my vote goes to the Mothra larvae. They are larvae... and they still toppled Godzilla. Mothra wins all.

My only thing about the larvae is that they won via sneak attack. For baby's its ingenious and they did a great job. But it wouldnt have worked against Godzilla and a partner, so I can say they were the greatest tag team. MGII and Titano also brought him to the brink of defeat and if not for Katsura's sacrifice its hard to say what would have come out. My thought is Godzila would have found a way to power through but stumbled back into the ocean instead of gone triumphantly. And if Titanosaurus weren't distracted its another story. But without the help of the humans to blow up the tower and me I dont know how the fight with Gigan and Ghidorah would have gone either. And while I think Showa MG vs KG is kind of a wash, I think if Titanosaurus and Gigan fight 10 times, Gigan wins 7-8 of those times and flees the others if the winds cause him problems. Add in the tower and thats a tag team to be avoided at all costs.

Of course we cant measure the tag teams in that way since If its against Hesei Godzilla you take the size and ability difference into account and the only showa counterpart I think outmatch their renditions are Rodan and possibly MG or King Ghidorah (though I think its a wash in spite of the Showa version being smaller in each case). MG I would say the Hesei version is more powerful but Godzilla needed no help to defeat him until it was Super Mechagodzilla.

The one thats notably missing from this list come to think of it is Kiryu and Mothra.

My bad, I have a tendency to do that.
So did you leave Tokyo SOS off because it was hard to quantify?

Also its crazy how mothra's size changes throughout the series. The 61 version was the largest. The final wars one is about the same size as from 92, probably since it was originally intended as a sequel to Destoroyah.
