Reputation of the films in Japan.

Audiences have different tastes obviously. Americans HATE Tingle from the Legend of Zelda series. Western audiences were a lot more divided on the Gundam SEED franchise compared to Japan where it was a huge hit.
That said, does anyone here in the know, know what the reputations of some films are in Japan compared to the West (which by now is pretty easy to figure out)
For example, is Godzilla vs Megalon considered a low point over there in Japan? Here it's "So Bad it's Good" to "So Bad It's Terrible" but the certain flavor is definitely there. Before, Terror Of Mechagodzilla was considered leagues better than Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla. Recently though, the two films are considered both on par with each other.
Or Godzilla vs Biollante? It's really well loved nowadays and considered the pinnacle of the Heisei era Godzilla films (lol). What of Return of Godzilla? A film that feels more like a 1970s/1980s Toho Disaster Film than it does a kaiju film and feels oddly out of tone compared to most films before and after it.
Just curious.
