First of all, I understand and respect where Toho/Hondas family are coming from here. Both were intrumental and primarily responsible for the success that Godzilla and all related characters have generated from 54' to present day. I understand that many americans have the common mistaken belief that monsters like Godzilla and King Kong are "public domain" because of their "household name" nature and understand that either party would/should have the right to sue/object as they see fit.
What I don't understand is why they can't use the same authoritative power in doing something useful, creative, marketable, or just plain utilize Godzilla in a good way. I hear lots of different things like, they don't care about him anymore so they just wanna milk every merchandising dime out of him, he's not marketable anymore, ect ect ect.
In case they haven't noticed, its quite evident Godzilla has a larger fanbase in the US than he has anywhere else (esp Japan where Ultraman/Kamen Rider are looked up to more). But then its always differences of opinion on how much TOHO wants pay for marketing in the US that hurts Godzilla here. I understand TOHO isn't Disney/Universal or any of those companies, but if they wanna make money with an entity that is a household name here, honey baby you gotta make the same investments or at least a damn good one like every successful studio here (or the world) makes to put larger than life characters like KING KONG, BATMAN, CAPTAIN AMERICA ect ect on the map. Godzilla "can" have the same success here too. It just feels to me that Toho doesn't care and just wants the Merchandise money off of him through the "low profile" they keep him under.
As far as whats happening now. I do feel Honda's family deserves something out of this for sure. However maybe instead of fighting, they should be working together to see a "successful return" for Godzilla here, there, or however/whenever he returns to the big screen.
