The announcement of the new comic got me thinking: "What kind of new foes will they come up with for Godzilla to battle?" and then I got to thinking "Just exactly how many foes have been come up with by someone who had LICENSE to do so that have never made it to an actual film? Basically just a retrospective on what the track record is on "original" creations (as we will see, some of these are not so original)

In order to not just have one HUGE post, I'm going to break it up by category:

Is "none of the above" an option? They all pretty much suck or are rather forgettable.

There are only two who I think might be interesting:

Gekido-jin...not because I particularly like him, but I do recall that an amazing Godzilla script called Godzilla vs the Space Monsters featuring King Ghidorah, Gigan, and Megalon battling Godzilla, Angilas, and a ancient statue/diety named Maijin Tuol (The script was rejected in favor of what was eventually GvsGigan). Maijin Tuol was a statue on display at Science Land next to the Godzilla Tower. When Gigan tries to cut it open with his buzzsaw to insert Alien Miko, he bleeds, comes to life, and helps G and Angilas. Gekido-jin seems to be very similar to Maijin Tuol...

Razin also looks cool because he's so different from the standard, traditional bipedal foes we are use to seeing (in the same ilk as Dogora). In general, I think the Godzilla series as a whole lacks an opponent like a Razin or Dogora, which would be a totally different type of opponent for Godzilla to battle.

The worst on this list? Wow...that's like choosing between vomit and crap. For me, it's Bagan, simply for the reason that we had to put up with so many crappy, god awful fan fics focused on him throughout the 90s-early 2000s. God I hate him...just another uninspired bi-pedal design (looks like Baragon if he took HGH and steriods)...thankfully he never saw the light of day, and hopefully never will...

I can't be the only one who really doesn't care about any Godzilla opponent who wasn't actually in a film, can I?

Red Ronin is really cool. Just the idea of an American comic trying out its own anime inspired Super Robot in the '70s is... what word to use? retrotastic?

Almost all the GINO the Series monsters had wonderful designs. Really great work on those characters.

I've never really read the Dark Horse or Marvel Comics (though I've come close to looking into DH), but the DH designs are definitely better than the Marvel stuff. None of those Marvel monsters look like they'd fit anywhere else than the universe they were introduced in.

I don't care much for the general DH designs, but I quite like Cybersaur - even if he may be a Mechagodzilla knockoff. I wish that instead of "homages" to older Toho characters, Marvel and DH would've just spent more time creating more inventive creatures for Godzilla to fight. Not to mention that a lot of the Marvel artwork is just bad. DH Godzilla looks pretty cool though.

Hanna-Barbara's Godzilla... perhaps it's just the dated animation that H-B liked to use back then, but I honestly cannot say I care for any of those monsters. Godzilla: The Series on the other hand had some great designs. C-Rex, Komo, and others are monsters I wouldn't mind making a reappearance.
